Hi. A week ago I purchased a 2008 Crystal Red 1LT MN6 Z51 NPP Coupe. Since day 1 I never saw 1-4 skip shift light. I was thinking it is because of break-in period and the fact that I do not go over 2K RPM. But now after 450 miles I do go up to 2,600 RPM but still no skip shift light. Yes, the engine is fully warm at 200 degrees. I start from stand still and go 20 mph in 1st, but no, still no light. Same for 15 mph and 22 mph. I need to add in 3 occasions, the shifter got stuck between 1 and 2 while shifting from 1st. I did not see the light and I (former Z28 and SS driver) do pay attention every time I shift. I called my dealer and asked them if someone has installed skip shift eliminator on this car or did a tunning... He said no and I believe him since the car had 14 miles on it when I got it. What is the problem? I did order Mild2Wild and SC skipshift eliminator, but have not received or installed any of them. I appreciate your feedback as I am very concerned regarding this.
All of the following conditions have to be met before the skip-shift feature will activate. It may be possible that you haven't been meeting one or more of them.
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• the vehicle is going 15 to 19 mph
(24 to 31 km/h) and
• the vehicle 21 percent throttle or less.
Even if you have a skip-shift eliminator, the indicator light will still be illuminated when conditions are met, but the solenoid in the tranny won't be activated.

Although not likely, it is possible the light is not working.
All dash warning lights should illuminate momentarily if you turn on the ignition but do not start the car. The 1-4 skip shift light should come on, which would at least verify that the light itself works.
Are you saying you "want" this feature to work? Not sure why you would want that.
Regarding the skip shift light, it is a pretty quick on/off when conditions are met. If you feel the tranny forcing you over to 4th and then look down at the dash, you have probably already missed the light. Go to a parking lot somewhere and take off in 1st and do not give it any throttle at all, keep looking at the dash and try to shift to 2nd at about 10 mph. You should not only see the skip shift light, but the tranny will try to force you over to 4th.
When you start the car the dash lights come on so you can verify their functionality and then they go off. Look at start up and see if you see the "1-4" symbol lit up.
If NO, then go to the dealer and get it fixed.
If yes, then you know the light should come on when CAGS initiates. Take note of the post that shows the conditions to get CAGS to activate. Take your car someplace where you can replicate those conditions and not run into something( back end of shopping mall or something). DO THOSE conditions and watch for the light. CAGS will stop you from going to 2nd and try to force you to go to 4th.
If you can't get CAGS to operate, go to dealer and get them to fix it (Since you want to defeat CAGS, this is probably not the thing you want to do)
If CAGS activates and you can't go to 2nd but no dash light, insert your !CAGS plug and be happy you don't have the dumb light.

Yes. All the conditions meet. But no light and no skip shift. Thanks for your reply.

Yes sir. It comes on with all the other lights at engine start up.
Mine 08 does the same thing it feels like it gets stuck between 1 and 2 and no light when shifting at low rpm. But other times the light comes on and I just put it in fourth gear then back to third . I guess it is time for the cags.

No. I do not want this feature as I already ordered SC eliminator. The fact that this might be a fault on a brand new car, and what else might be broken bothers me. I rather this function work as per factory spec and then put the eliminator myself.
I have my eyes on dash when trying this non-operational feature. To my understanding all above conditions are met. No light and no forcing to go to 4th. Thank you for your reply.
this would be the only thing I'd be concerned about....altho it may have been trying to go into 4th gear here.
sounds like the light is INOP, no big deal.
maybe drive another 6 speed at the dealer or somewhere and see if it acts the same.
bagwell, thank you for your post. This is a good idea to go back to dealer and drive another one. I will do this and post back. The light comes on at startup

eboggs I agree. I am sure the light comes on at start up. And I am sure I meet all conditions for skip shift. But no light and no forcing to skip. Yes it is good not to have the light but I wanted a brand new car to have this feature and I disable it. Not being disabled if it is a malfunction. Thank you for your post.

Good to knows I am not the only one with 1-2 getting stuck. Someone told me it might be CAGS trying to engage but one of the conditions go away early.
Yes. Get the CAGS eliminator. To me CAGS is made only for saving on Gas Guzzler tax and not to live with it.
1. The only time mine shifts 1 to 4 is if you are going very slow in 1st when you go to shift. You should be able to try this and make it work. Do not force the shifter, let it go were it wants to.
2. Do a search on this forum. There is a thread that explains the procedure to disable the skip shift. If I remember correctly, you just need to remove one fuse ( I believe the #10) and it's done. No need to spend any extra $.

Steve, thank you for your reply.
A1) Yes I am aware of conditions for this feature to work.
A2) Good idea. Let me search and then check the fuse box. It might be the fuse blown or not being there. But I also read that taking off that fuse will trig check engine light.

Um... Pulling the #10 can cause SES to light up. I had a problem with my wiring that in essence was "no fuse" and I got a SES light pointing to the CAGS circuit. Just thought I'd toss that in. If you have the !CAGS plug, just use it. It only takes a minute to put it in the circuit.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
As per this forum's good members recommandations I checked fuse #10. Guess what! It was loose on its place. Now I do not know how did it happen but I am glad I checked it. I did not notice that first that I have found the cause but as soon as I started driving and the engine warmed up, the 1->4 light came on Weird that I am happy to see the annoying light, but the CAGS eliminator is on its way. Thank you again everybody.
Mystery is why the SES light did not show up? I drove this car for about 460 miles so far. Exact fuse resistance by installing it incorrectly? Hard to believe. But I am happy everything ended good.
