Can This Be True Bowling Green To Shut Down Line Again In December
From Detroit Free Press:
General Motors Corp. said today that it plans to idle two assembly plants, including a plant in Detroit, for one week due slow car sales.
GM said it will shut down its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant for one week beginning Nov. 24 and plans to shut down its plant in Bowling Green, Ky., beginning Dec. 1, said GM spokesman Chris Lee.
GM employs 1,700 at the Hamtramck plant that makes the Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS sedans. GM employs 800 at the Bowling Green plant where it makes Chevrolet Corvette and the Cadillac XLR sports coupes.
The shutdowns are in addition to previously announced plans to idle the Hamtramck plant for one week beginning Jan. 5, followed by an indefinite layoff for 500 employees beginning Jan. 12. The layoff will occur because GM plans to slow production of an assembly line to adjust to slower automotive sales, Lee said.

Just a guess...Corvette production numbers will be slashed and the Solstice and Sky production will be ramped up Bowling Green. They just are making too many Vettes and need to make better use of that BG workforce.

They do shut down, I know because my car had the last build week in December of last year, I had a TPW of 12-17-07, they actually produced it on the 17 and shipped out the next day 18th. The following week they shut down B.G. for a week, but the transportation trucks continue to delivery through the holidays. I took delivery in the west coast on the 29th. It was a Merry Xmas

To put it in perspective, GM was at 50% of their sales plan for October on the 30th of the month. If consumers don't buy you have to cut production and inventory along with fixed expenses. This economic crisis may put GM and their suppliers in deep trouble in the months to come.

Another market correction, 40,000 Vettes a year, is too many!

I'm glad they are cutting production rather than throwing out rebates to try to keep production up. That just kills the value of all of our cars.

In 1994 they made 23,330 in 1995 they made 20,742 and in 1996 the number 21,536. So current production of over 36K may well be too high for the economic conditions.
