I think I figured out the answer why there is such a difference of opinion on the "drone". It seems if you have a A6 the drone is much more pronounced than if you have a stick IMHO

The drone that some muffler systems produce cannot be easily reduced with added sound insulation......when the mufflers drone, they are actually exciting the whole body structure of the car to resonate-- that's why the noise is so pervasive and ear piercing.....no one should plan on getting that "really loud exhaust" that they've always wanted and then reducing the dreaded drone with insulation...just ain't gonna' happen....

imo the coupes with the amphitheater rear end with the sound waves bouncing off the huge rear glass drone way more than the vertte
I have put 2 layers of the aluminum butyl and also the foam with butyl too...it muffles the drone to an acceptable level for me. the best solution is to put resonators in the pipe itself, GHL had made a set of pre muffler resonator pipes I was lucky enough to snag-way more effective-hardly effects WOT noise. I was also thinking of post muffler resonators as well.
One thing I think isn't being considered when talking about sound deadening and adding weight, is most of these exhaust systems like the BNB bullets are 20 pounds less than stock and 30ish less than systems like corsa. So if you go with a system like this, gain an extra 2-3 horsepower and come close to a wash on weight addition, it doesn't seem as foolish. The sound deadening also helps with road noise and rattles presumably.
If if the sound deadening works, and can be kept <50 pounds, it makes an exhaust like the bullets not such a bad idea.
FWIW I have the bullets. I do not have sound dampening, so I can't comment on its effectivenes. But I can see why people search this topic. 98% of the time I don't have a done problem. That other 2% can be miserable though.

I did the same. 2 layers, but only 1 layer on wheel wells. Bought from Home Depot. 50% improvement and much more tolerable.

If your looking to help with interior noise try the Blockit. Installs in 60 seconds.
Its quick & effective. Helps take the edge off drone. Great with tire and road noise. If your concerned with weight, take it out (no adhesives) on race day. Reinstall for the trip back.
I'm sure the original poster solved that drone issue in 8 years. He probably owns a C7 by now with stock exhaust, just so he doesn't repeat the same mistake.
Dynamat and such only reduce, they do not eliminate the drone.
I just had some Billy Boat Bullets installed and at certain RPM ranges the drone ear piercing. I love the sound at idle and at WOT, but @ 2000rpm it's annoying. I was thinking maybe some Dynamat in the cargo area under the carpet, or under the car where the exhaust is. Has anyone out there reduced exhaust drone and how.

Most of us had the same experience lowering the Drone levels
Added high-end padding in the floor, doors, and rear compartment. Heat from muffler and transmission reduced a lot. Drone is slightly reduced but your ears will re-adjust to the new level of drone which makes it become a problem again. The trick is always drive in 5th gear. It puts you in a range that drone is not the main noise.
The padding did help a lot with road noise.
Also running regular tires and not run-flats reduce the road noise a lot too.
I love the sound...I think I have MidAmericas the set that's in the middle between mild and crazy loud.

The noise is coming from the entire car resonating at a low frequency being amplified by the shape of the rear compartment glass. Like standing in front of a megaphone.
My '08 came with the B&B Bullets when I got it. I went back to NPP that it came with originally. Much happier. Loved the sound but detested the drone on the road.
