Summer tires in sunny clear winter days
As I got into my car today after grocery shopping at Wegman's, I happened to glance at the MB CLS-55 AMG. I noticed that it wore summer tires. Temparature wise was 30F, with day time high projected to be 38F. Then my curiosity got into me. I looked around and saw a Boxster and a Corvette Z06. (This Wegman's is in a well-to-do area.) I checked their tires, and both wore summer tires. Which got me thinking ....
to those who live in the cold weather, how cold do you drive your car with summer tires on at the time you go out?
- Assume day time high will be 5F higher than when you're about to go out.
- Roads are clear, free of ice, snow, salt and it's a beautiful day.

I always keep the summer tires on my Vette.
If the sun is shining, and the roads are clear of salt, I'll take it out during the winter......regardless of the temperature.
Otherwise, it sleeps under cover in the garage.

No problem here with temps around 20. You just have to reduce the performance potential about 20% like you were driving a higher performance sedan. No big deal. I have non supercars.

I think the problem here is that all cars have lower tire performance in very cold temps, its just that we don't drive them like we do our Vettes, so we never notice.

Took my 2009 convertible out for a nice drive this morning. Air temp was 28 the whole time. No probs whatsoever...think she enjoyed getting out of the garage!!!
Peace, out.

Summer tires always, cold, warm, whatever.

Summer tires year round, I'm just more careful. When they're cold they're like plastic, so I take it REAL easy until they warm up.

Let's be clear. Which of you cold weather daredevils are running around on Z51/Z06 Supercar EMTs? Who has base/F55 GS-2s?
I've tip-toed through a St. Louis winter with GS-2s. Traction control let me creep up my driveway with a 10% slope after my snow-blower trimmed 8 inches down to about a quarter inch. But even with my new snow tires, if the side streets haven't been plowed or there's freezing rain, Red and I stay home.

I started a similar thread earlier after reading some doom/gloom posts and then I took it out an hour ago in 30 degree weather and guess what?... It handled just like a regular car. OMG
Drive it!
Drive it!

The traction is very poor when it's below 30 degrees - especially on launch.
It's very easy to fish-tail......you just have to be careful.

This will be the second winter, driving on Z-51 Supercar tires for me. Drive intelligently and there are no problems, but, stay off the roads when there's snow or ice, if you can. I use the wife's Acadia for that.
