It was an RPO (regular production option) number in the early 60's. All GM options are usually 3 digit codes and "Z" and "F" codes are usually suspension options.

Not confirmed but the Z( from 1963) was supposed to represent Zora as in Zora Arkus Duntov.

I go along with this also...part of the history of these great cars! (also ZR1 derived from this name)

F codes are suspension and Z codes are performance.

From this page:

The RPO Z06 package first offered on ’63 models included a 20 percent larger diameter front antiroll bar, a vacuum brake booster, a dual master cylinder, sintered-metallic brake linings within power-assisted Al-Fin drums cooled by front air scoops and vented backing plates, larger diameter shocks and springs nearly twice as stiff as standard.

These Corvettes came to be known as known as the “Big Tanks” because the package initially had a 36.5-gallon gas tank versus the standard 20-gallon for races such as Sebring and Daytona. At first, the package was only available on coupes because the oversized tank would not fit in the convertible.

Had nothing to do with Zora. Originally RPO codes were grouped as to function, but as time went by, there was a lot of cross talk between function and RPO code. For example, by 1978, Z01=Monza Spyder, Z02= Monza Spyder Appearance package, Z03= Landau Equipment, Z06=Luxuy Equipment, Z14= engine Processuing-Non Integral Head, Z15=Spec. Sport Equip. SS-454, Z52=Seat-Full Foam, etc.
