I've updated my radio to a Kenwood DNX 8120, 8" sub, and Alpine PDX-5. I left the stock speakers in place except for disconnecting the center speaker. I'd like to install some better speakers in the stock locations without doing major surgery. I'm looking for speaker suggestions.
MB quart and Focul sound pretty amazing in a vette. Not just loud but loud, clear and very spacious sounding. Priced a tad higher than off the shelf speakers but worth it if you want the best.
I have JL C5-650 components up front and JL XR-525's in the rear location with a JL Stealthbox 10" sub. The JL speakers are a direct swap with the addition of Komomans speaker plates. Its hard to explain to you how good it sounds, but it is fantastic! You cant go wrong with JL Audio.

Hey Ken, I've got Polks in mine that were done by Vette&CobraGuy before I bought his C6. They sound killer and you might give him a PM about.
BTW, you're gonna LOVE that 8120. GREAT Garmin nav system, Bluetooth, all the bells and whistles and playing your music direct from a USB memory stick (no iPod needed!) is so cool too.
I did at first but wanted Ipod so I put in a Kenwood 8019. It sounded fine with the Bose unit. I did have JL 450/4 and a 300/2 amplifiers powering all the speakers with the Stock head as well as the Kenwood. The stock unit or the Kenwood for that matter doesnt provide enough wattage to power the speakers to their full potential.

I've had the Kenwood system for about six months and love it. I have an ipod permanently mounted in the car with about 1000 songs. As with any stereo, after a while you start to hear the weakness'. I want something crisp. I like to turn the volume up when I'm driving alone. The Bose sound sort of tin cannish.

The Polks in mine sure don't. Tons of low end , etc.
One thing. Sure the 8120 is enabling the sub woofers? I had that problem in my C5 when I dropped a Kenwood 7120 into it - Kenwood had mislabeled the sub woofer enable line so at first, the subs only were powered on FM. Finally found their error and got the sub enable line working right (Kenwood had the enable line mixed up in their paperwork).
Oh and one more VERY important thought. Make sure you have loudness enabled in the 8120 too. I had the same perception as you when I first dropped in the 7120. It was ok but nothing to write home about. I enabled loudness and man! A night and day improvement.
