Why is Red the primary color that I see painted on brake calipers. Does anybody know where it originated?
I have an '07 LMB coupe and plan on a powder coat but I thought about maybe velocity yellow or maybe atomic orange.

I remember in the 1970's that racing Porsche's calipers seem to always be colored red. At least with Porsche, yellow calipers are used to signify a ceramic brake system. Brembo makes calipers in a array of colors, but I don't if their colors have any meaning.
I assumed that (on non ZO6's) the owners were influenced by the red calipers on C5 and C6 ZO6's.
I'm currently torn between colors for calipers on my LMB. Definitely not red, perhaps color matched or gloss black. We'll see.
Being a contrarian, I decided with my LMB to go with chrome black alloys and satin black calipers/brackets/backing plates. Many find this color combo not 'standing out' enough, but I like subtle...
I'm pretty sure the red color provides better stopping than other colors. Just Like Arctic White exterior color is faster than other colors.

#Well white was the orignal vette color,,,,,,then GM made a RED vette...and found out that RED is THE FASTEST COLOR.....and the lore of the red vette was born...hence little red corvette and all the other legends of RED being the most popular color for a sports car...soon Ferrari and all the others followed suit.....So all other colors can be bought....
but the truth is there are Red vette owners and all the others that wish they had one

I fought between red and the yellow to match my car, but I didnt want to stop every 20 miles to clean the dust off of the yellow calipers. I think the red goes back to the idea of a sports car....people assume ' Red sports car'.
C6FirstVette That black sure looks clean, is it hard to keep it that way?
No... I had the rotors zinc plated so most of the rust is eliminated (except on pad contact surfaces which goes away with a push of a pedal ) and is use Porterfield R4S pads which are extremely low dust.
