As the above. The '60s Big block and for that matter just about all the "muscle" cars of the era were almost all. low 13s, 112 mph+ cars. Tires and suspensions just couldn't get the power down. If you were able to mnake some modifications then you would start to break parts. A select few could run in the 12s, but were limited production cars such as the 427 Cobra. Some race only "legal street" cars such as the Ford Thunderbolt, Z-11 Chevs were faster, but a new C-6 with 430 Hp
can easily run low 12s at 115+ mph right off the showroom floor. Now if you're talking "fun factor" well that's a different story.

I remember that article! It was one of the very first issues of Road & Track I ever bought, at the age of 16! That time period was the beginning of me falling in love with the Corvette! 5 years after that I got my first one (a used 84 model)

I had a 67 427/435. Owned it for 20 years. Wasn't real sad to let it go. Looked great, sounded great, but wasn't all that fast. Turned in the mid 13's when I ran it a couple times at the track. I own a 05 LS2 6 speed and that car is by far quicker. It would beat that 67 in a heart beat. Now put that up agaist by C5 and it would be toast. Well with 640 at the crank the C5's not exactly stock but as a DD I still like the C6.

I owned a new ’69 427/390 and now have an LS2 C6. There is no question that the C6 accelerates faster, has a higher top end, stops quicker, and handles better. Sure wish I still had the ’69.

I'd bet money those times are not on street tires. I've got tons of magazine tests that did not come near those numbers unless they bolted on drag slicks.

I don't care what car can beat it.
Great episode--I felt sorry for those cars as that Canadian lunatic power-shifted them all without mercy. I remember 0-60 times in the mid to low 5's for the faster ones. Amazing stuff to see those supposedly factory stock antiques getting put through their paces.

Many of those car mags back then tested factory ringers that weren't exactly stock, including tires. I seem to remember a 65 Pontiac 421 catalina which did 0-60 mph in IIRC, 3.6 seconds.

I saw a road test in Motor Trend two or three years ago that compared a "67 427/435 HP coupe to an '06 MN-6 bone stock car. The C6 put preformed the 427 in all tests. Technology is amazing.

Ever look at the tire width on a C-2 ?

The specs look better on paper then at the track, as the suspension, tires and other technologies offered little in getting the power to the ground compared to todays performance cars.

'66 was the first year for the 427 in a Corvette and it was initially rated at 450hp but then later reduced to a "safer" 425.

The quickest 1/4 mile ET that I've read was 12.8 and seems plausible with some better than stock rear rubber.

Mine had correct, original-sized tires, and that combined with the stock suspension made control difficult, albeit very exciting at WOT.

My 40 years newer C6 is definitely faster but I miss the sounds of the side exhaust and the smell of high octane leaded.

I owned a 66 427 way back then. Although it has been some 40+ years I can remember the raw power the car had but my LS3 just seems to keep pulling and it sure turns alot better. I wouldn't want a 66 for a daily driver but oh to live for the weekends and some crisp clear weather!

May have to disagree with you........a good friend had a 67' 435HP 4spd, bolted on M&H's(which were crap in todays world), headers and 4:56's all else stock......12.25 at Lion's April of 68'.

Glad I was a part of the wild "60's" when muscle cars were everywhere... Those V8's made some wonderful sounds.. I was truly addicted to the low end grunt.. My mighty LS3 is quicker... but the low end grunt of the older V8's was way more intense.... and when those back barrels kicked in... the sounds were just as awesome...

I could be wrong but I believe 'fastness' relates to top speed and quickness relates to acceleration. By this definition it's not even close. Could a C2 even do 150 MPH safely?

So why do people so much money for the old muscle cars?I had a 69 vert a couple of years ago and realized that i would have to stand on the brakes to stop the cars.I sold it a week later!Buy new,and don't pay those ridiculous inflated prices for that tired iron that you see on Barret-Jackson!

That's impressive Jim, and a generous offer. You must have an interesting filing and storage system.

Yeah, it's the closet from hell. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I tell her that some of those magazines are older than she is and to leave my closet the hell alone!
