Default M6

How many of those who have a M6 use 2nd gear for take-off? I just find that the car has so much torque that unless I need to take-off fast, I simply use 2nd gear.

I simply wouldn't do that as a general rule. There's a reason why there is a 1st gear! It's to take torque strain off all your drive line components like your clutch. I seriously doubt GM would have given us 1st if it wasn't needed.. It's your car so I'm certainly not suggesting how you should drive it....... just not something I would make a habit of doing with mine.......

I've been driving manual transmission cars for years including a C5 for 4 years, but never tried using 2nd to get the car rolling until I got the C6 in February. Obviously, I don't want to do anything that's detrimental to the car.

I'll keep that in mind.

I guess my new found method of getting the car rolling will be quickly stopped! I definitely don't want to prematurely wear down my clutch!

I'm glad I asked the question here and I've got to stop listening to my buddy has a 5th wheeler and does it routinely with his truck. I know it's probably apples and oranges.

Thanks.

If you’re on a slight downhill gradient its OK. For normal everyday driving a second gear start won’t/should not happen much.

FWIW the Z51 cars with the lower tranny gear ratios DOES make a 2ed gear start more feasible. I did it a few times with my 05 Z51.

Does your buddy with the 5th wheeler have a Diesel by some chance?

I drove large commercial trucks and depending on the load and inclination of the road sometimes started in 2ed or 3rd gear!

The torque situation of a Diesel does make his statement understandable. Hopefully though he only does that when not towing.

Like I said the Z51 does have lower ratios, IF you’re going to do 2ed gear starts pick your opportunities carefully.

The LS series of engines does have decent torque, but like others said if done under the wrong conditions could be rough on your clutch!

I've got a downhill traffic light that I go through daily. If I catch it red, it is a second gear start. I do have Z51 also. With traffic, first is simple not necessary in that circumstance. Much smoother and simpler to start in second. But choose you place and circumstance.
