Default 1st Oil Change?

Hi,

Getting ready to do my first oil change (@650 miles) and wanted to know how many quarts an '09 base coupe takes? I think I'll stick with the book and go with Mobil 1 5w-30 with a Mobil 1 filter. Does anyone know the model number for the Mobil 1 filter?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey,
Lots of threads on this subject. Please do a search. Also in your manual.
I think 5.5 qt for base LS3, and 6.0 if you have Z51 performance option.

Mobil M1-113 for your 09. Oil capacity should be in your owners manual.

Hi,

Thanks, I looked in the manual and did not see the oil filter model number or number of quarts for a Z51. Do you know where it is in the manual?

I also did a quick search and did not find this info. I must not be using an appropriate search phrase.

Best regards,
Jeffrey

650 miles? Seems a bit excessive and hardly necessary. Modern engines just do not need this kind of "break-in" oil change.

Hi,

I bought my Vette in 6/09 but the build date was 6/08, so I think I better do it. What do you think?

Best regards,
Jeffrey

I used to think that way also, but a few people posted oil analysis results on their first change and the results indicated the oil would be getting abrasive well before the normal change point on a new engine.

The way I'm doing it:
First change with 75% life remaining
Second change with 50% life remaining
Third change with 25% life remaining
After that, follow the OLI down to near 0

But you won't convince the people who are convinced otherwise, so let it go. They will post comments like CHEAP INSURANCE, etc. etc. Whatever, it's their money to WASTE......

Aren't you suppose to change Mobil 1 every 12 months?

Jeffrey,
You are correct. The manual indicates to change the oil once a year regardless.
"However, the engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset."

Go for it man. I was just saying 650 mi. wasn't much mileage but didn't know the time frame.

It can't hurt anything to change it. I do think that it is a little bit excessive but I'm sure the ExxonMobil employees & stockholders here on the forum will be happy.

Do it now...get all that machining junk out of your engine. And use the manual as an estimate of the oil quantity, but for the final top-off, the dipstick should be the final word. After running the engine and letting it sit for an hour, the oil level should be at the top line on the 'stick.

Let the guy change his oil. It's certainly not going to do any damage.
