Glad you made it out of that one, Jost. That was a bad one for sure. It does look like the weather/roads were wet which doesn't help car control. But Germans are far, far more used to driving fast, and driving in bad weather conditions. I guess this was just one of those accidents. Again, hope you fully recover. Jost,
you are one lucky SOB. The pictures look horrifying, but as stated in previous posts, the airbag sensors are mounted in specific locations and if you were sliding under the guardrail they might not have been activated.
This accident reminds me of my very good friend Daniela Tax-Szilvay who drove under a guardrail on 7/1/2005 in Germany, unfortunately she did not survive.
I wish you all the best!

Having been stationed in Germany, Italy and Spain for over half of my AF career, I can recall the horrific accidents I personally saw. Since speeds are so much higher the resulting crashes are horrific.
Heading to Munich from Frankfurt traffic stopped for over an hour, it wasn't until a medevac helo flew over that we knew it was bad. By the time we got to the scene they were just draping a big MB sedan that looked like bomb exploded. I was busy trying to navigate traffic and debris and didn't see the Teddy Bear laying on the pavement, but my passenger did. Guess there were kids involved.
Be glad you survived.

120 mph or 200 kph in the rain.....
that's like running the car 66% of its' top speed...in the rain!!!!!
with other cars around you.

Be thankful you were able to make this thread as many people don't walk away from 120 mph crashes. I lived in Germany for 8 years and use to drive down A1 frequently so I know that area.
Did you have summer tires on the Vette? If you had summer I'm guessing they are ultra high performance (ZR rated) which means they hate cold temperatures and your traction was reduced by the wet pavement.
Did you crash as you were passing the other two cars? At 120 mph, it really does not take much to make everything go wrong. It looks like the German barriers are still strong as ever. If it was in the US you would most likely be dead now.
What did the German Police fine you?
I think the airbags did not go off because the area where the airbag sensors are located probably went under the guard rail first. They might not have gone off due to the angle you hit the guard rail or electronics were maybe damaged too much.

To the OP, congrats on making it through!
Having just seen a Corvette fatality from the Houston area in here a few weeks ago, it is another sobering reminder of the fact that "speed kills" or can come very close to doing so. Not knowing what really happened as far as rolling, etc., I'm still very impressed that the Corvette, even in convertible form, protected the driver cockpit.
Feel free to tell me it's none of my business, but what were the other cars involved and were you racing?

Please remember folks if he was driving on the Autobahn then he was probably within the speed limit for that particular road.
OP i am glad you made it out alive. Hope you make a full recovery, and sorry for your accident.

I am very clear about that - the question was if he was racing and what other cars were involved.

Germans have a rule where it depends on conditions. 120 mph on a wet surface is probably too fast. Everyone thinks you can just floor it on the autobahn but more km of the autobahn are becoming restricted by a speed limit. The area he crashed is also near the Cologne-Dortmund metro area. At that speed it does not take much to lose control. Reduced grip due to moisture on the road will increase the chances that something will happen.

Dear All
I am overwhelmed by the frequend comments and compassion (right word?)!!!
Sorry, "fatal" we are using this word also like "perilous or serious or life-threatening". I survived heavily hurt. Yes, the car moved underneath the guard rail. But please consider, before this, the car front crashed the guard rails (see the car front at the pic). So, the airbag has to be activated by the deceleration and/or intrusion!
The tires are from Vredestein and not Goodyear.
Due to the "private driver" fire fighter, the car is looking like immediate after the crash. The hang on panels (but drivers door) and convertible roof were just demolished by the guard rail and trees.
According to third parties, my speed was approximate 120 mph.

Does anyone else get the impression the original poster may be looking to file a law suit ? Because the air bags didn't open? 120 mph on a wet surface is not the smartest thing I have ever heard of?

Hey, it's the internet. For all we know, the OP had nothing to do with the crash and lives in North Dakota.
