Advice on incidental scratch repair - black car
Hello all - I know there are a ton of black C6 owners on this forum. Someone has got to have an answer to this - I have owned my car for over a year now, its black, been following most of the cleaning advice - but here's the deal, the car gets incidental scratches on it from everyday use - I just drove up to Monterey from San Clemente over the weekend 800 mile round trip, there is a scratch on the side of the car near the passenger wheel well, but there are other small ones around the door handle and rear hatch areas - what do you guys use to "fix" them? The Billy Mays scratch product or something else?

We all Love Black!
You have to love BLACK to appreciate the work it takes to look perfect. Most of the time you are the only person who really knows. What I have done and works for me. I take my buffer with a soft form pad and use polish rather than any compound. I do it on my 92 Blackrose and my wide body C6. Understanding in time I think with BLACK you will have to have it buffed out with using a final cut compound of some type. Good luck, you need it when you have BLACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would try rubbing them by hand using a fine compound made for clear coat paint, if you can't get them out have the area buffed with a machine.
This is the safest way if you have no experience with a buffer, then just polish the rest of the car.

I own lots of black - a Suburban, pickup, harley and an '06 Coupe. While I haven't tried Zaino (yet), I've had real good success with Meguiars products. They have a series of online videos that shows how they recommend dealing with scratches that I found helpful.

3M Swirl and Scratch remover:

This stuff works! If the scratch is deep, then I like ZainoPC first, and follow up with the 3M.
Good luck

I was told if you can feel the scratch with your finger nail, then you are not going to get the scratch out. You may make it look better, but it will not 100% go away. Is that correct information?

That is true. The fingernail test can confirm the scratch is through the clear and into the paint.

Meguiars 205 and/or 105 compound with a Porter Cable polisher. Then cover with a quality sealant. I use Ultima Paint Guard Plus, which I think is excellent.
I would not suggest wet sanding unless you are a pro. I am no pro for sure and I know my limits. I would NEVER wet sand.

Really? I call
3M has great products, had mine cut with 3M yet Im still too picky. New detailers Ive solicited are like "what do you want me to do, its already shiny". :o
Anyway, Billy Mays stuff comes off after awhile, looks good at first but doesnt last.
Meguiars Scratch X is great for minor DIY.
Good Luck

Yup, a black crayon will fill most of the deeper scars, otherwise I would do a Dr. ColorChip fill-pricer then the crayon of course:

You do not have to be a pro to wet sand a small scratch with 2000 grit paper. You do have to pay attention and you need a good buffer but it is easy to do and safe if you pay attention do a little research. It is easy as pie. Sand lightly till water get milky and you will see the paint turn dull and you go OH SH-t what have I done....Then use compound and buff and like magic no scratch and the repair is permanent unlike filling it with wax.
If it is in the primer it won't work...and you would have to paint it anyhow...
Man up.
