Default Does anyone take off from a stop in 2nd gear?

I had a 2008 with the Z51 package, and for those that don't know, 2nd gear for the 2008 Z51 transmission was fairly close to the 1st gear ratio of the standard C6 tranny.

Soo, to avoid the 1 -4 shift lock, I would take off in 2nd all the time. I put over 20k miles on the car, and never noticed any shifting or clutch issues. Naturally, I never dumped the clutch, just took off normally. If I was in a hurry, I always took off in 1st.

I don't do the 2nd gear take off as frequently with the 2011 GS, but I was curious if others did the same thing.

I do it quite often from a 3 or 4-way rolling stop. Sure beats installing a skip shift eliminator..

havent tried it from a stop but if im "slightly" rolling i'll use 2nd instead of 1st...on top gear i remember they tested with a z06...from a stop, in 5th gear, and took it all the way up to i forgot how fast...ran like a champ!!...now, i have no clue how much damage that would actually cause, but was pretty damn cool

I use 1st always, if I skip a gear it normally is second. As for the 1 thru 4 skip, if the light comes on I just add more power.

Although the gearing on my 2005 Z51 was more aggressive, first gear isn't dramatically lower than on my 2009 F55. In both cars, second gear standing starts are very easy to do. If in stop and go traffic, I will often just leave it in second gear. No problem at all, regardless of whether it's a base, F55, GS, or Z51 setup.

It takes 2 minutes to install and beats the crap out of the 1-4 shift. Doesn't effect anything else, including warranty so I'm not sure why eveyone doesn't have it installed.

My skip shift is "tuned" out, but with the 4:10's I use second all the time from stop and go directly into fourth. No need to go much higher than 1500 rpm too. This is my around town mode on residential streets. Just cruising and enjoying.

I use 2, 4, and 6th if I'm going faster than 40 MPH. Works great and easier on the clutch leg.

YMMV?

I have started in second by accident. When I go to shift, i notice that I am already in second.

The fuse trick is so easy that I don't understand why everyone does not do it to eliminate the forced 1-4 shift! It was the first thing that I did to my car, and it may be in my head, but the car seems to shift better overall without the nanny engaged.

As long as you turn traction control off, hold the throttle to the floor then dump the clutch it's fine.

yea, speaking of dumping the clutch with the traction control off, I still have to remember to try the launch control with the 2011.

I'll post how it works out if I get a chance to try it on the way home tonight.

Why? Saving on gas?

Get an auto next time (or a Cobalt)...

The reason I took off in 2nd with the 2008 was because my daily driver back then was a 4 cylinder SUV, and I spun in 1st just about every time it took off whenever I drove the vette. It was scary different vehicles.

Since I moved to Florida, I drive the new vette daily, and with the wider tires (and the Gen2 tires on mine, since I have the F55 suspension), they stick like glue on the warmer roads, so 1st gear takeoffs work for me.

I'm averaging about 17 mpg with the GS, so no saving gas (yet). If the prices keep rising, my foot will certainly get lighter.
