174 mph in a Convertible

I wonder if I had enough space if I'd be able to hit my current redline limited 191 top speed...or if I raised the rev limiter to 7200 my speed at redline 5th would be 199.9..... no way with my current power level.
That ZR1 is one fast car.

Thanks for posting Joe. This clears the air a lot I think. I knew something had to be up and it seems that this could be just what it is. I'll report back when I have time to hit the dyno for more in depth digging.

My car would definitely bog down if I shifted from 5th to 6th at 180 mph.

There is a slight bogging down when going from 5th to 6th, mst likely due to the shift to a lower rpm, not to mention the wind resistance. You'll note that the ZR1 did the same thing during the Nurburgring record performance when it bogged a few mph before finally (barely) hitting 179 mph before having to brake. Cool video to watch though!

And for sure you bog when going from 5th to 6th. Check out Steve in his C5Z which has a much lower 5th gear than our C6's. The C5Z tops out in 5th around 157.
I'm pretty sure GM put in a taller 5th in the C6 so that they could brag about the 186 top speed in the c6 and 198 in the C6Z...I still have the postcard somewhere.
Here's Steve, listen when he hits 6th.

Congrats! You really got me thinking about the aerodynamics of a vert vs. a hard top. I've hit 170 bone stock in my '05 before I let off. She still had quite a bit more left in her, but I'm sure you are pushing my HP than I am stock. I would be really curious to see what the difference of the air turbulence is in a wind tunnel for verts vs. hard tops.

If the mile run is set up like a 1/4 mile run, the first set of lights is positioned 33 feet before the finish line and the second see of lights is positioned 33 feet after the finish line.
if you get off the gas at the time you cross the finish line, and start decelerating for that last 33 feet, vs staying in the gas for that last 3 feet, you can see why a GPS could show a higher speed then the average speed over 66 feet, if one is slowing down for the last 33 feet. Even if you stayed in the gas for that final 33 feet, and then you let off, your speed would be the average for the 66 feet between the lights where as the GPS would record the speed at the last timing light.
Or, whoever set up the lights, had them spaced incorrectly.

Very nice run for one mile - that had to be on fun day.
