I apologize if this is a dumb question.

Is there an easy way to tell how a car was originally equipped using the VIN number?

There's a car I'm interested in buying and I'd like to know what options it came with.

Type in the VIN and you should have the factory installed options. I believe the colors were all listed in grey. They may have changed that.

It gives you the rarity of the factory optioned car, too.

Yes, it is possible. The easiest way if you have access to the car is to open up the glove box and look at the tag to the left that has all the 3-digits codes. Copy them all down and you can decode what came on the care. If you don't have access to the car you can send the VIN to a couple of people here and they can run it through the GMVIS system and get you the same info plus a lot more. I know GMautotech got me mine a while back. Possibly partstaxi or gmpartshouse may be able to help.

No. By itself, the VIN will not tell you how it's equipped. It will tell you the body style and which engine it has. That's about all.

However, if someone who has access (like PartsTaxi.com) to the GM VIS looks it up on that system, it will tell you quite a bit, as indicated above.

Yeah, its pretty meaningless since it seems to factor in the build date when it comes up with the "rarity" factor ... so yours was 1 of 1 with your options built that week ...

Still I like the site overall, they just need to tweak it a little ...

I know it was delivered Sept 22, 2004 and is one of 1274 Precision Red coupes . . .

How can you tell if a car is a Z51 package from the vin?

You can't. Either do the VIN report as discussed above, or look on the plate on the left inside in the glove box. It will show "Z51" if it is.

That's not a C6, that's a GMC vehicle. The 3rd character in the VIN says that. It's also a 2006 GMC.

Option packages were not coded into the VIN until model year 2010. Your C6 is a model year 2005, coupe with front & side airbags, with the LS2 engine.
