Default FIRST SNEAK PEEK: Smith Design TRUE D-shaped Steering Wheel

Ive been developing my own steering wheel cause no one makes exactly what I want, especially at a reasonable price. it is a very slow process, but i did a good amount of work last night at mocked up a flat bottom. I used a paper towel roll, so it is NOT really what its gonna look like, but i wrapped it in some scrap leather to give you a little idea.

Inspiration coming from the Audi R8 GT:

The Audi R8 wheel does look good, quite a project you have taken on, good luck.

Try to make the size of the rim consistant. Nice job so far. I've thought about buying an extra wheel and modifying(cutting/welding) the bottom to create more of a D-shape. Good luck.

i attempted this same project a little over a year ago. the problem i was unable to solve was how to make a rubber mold to cover the new flat area at the bottom of the wheel. i spoke with a special effects shop that sells mold making equipment and they said it could be done (duh). the big obstacle i had was the amount of money required to set up the molds. just not something that i had the cash for at the time. good luck with your project though if you can make one at a reasonable price im sure you would have more buyers on here!

Looks good. Keep us updated. You're local so I'm sure I'll get to see it in person at some point.

that is something i am trying to figure out. although i have access to molding, i will make this one my hand. even if i did produce and sell them, it'd be so limited, id probably just make all of them by hand.

i have an idea of materials i am going to use.

no idea.i am doing all of the plastic/rubber by hand. no molding. then i need to make sure the circumference of the wheel stays consistent. then i need to sand down the areas that need sanding (thumbs). then i need to add the hand grips. then wrap it.

today was the first day i did work on it in about 2 weeks.

How will this rate with DPS?

It seems that there will be liability issues with it if you sell it on the open market or just for your personal use.

this is being developed for my personal use.

if it does get reproduced and sold, keep in mind it is just like many after market modifications. Although it should never fail, it is clearly modified and not built to OEM specs.

I would hope that after market manufactures of steering wheels would have a DPS certificate with there new design, if not I would be very hesitant in buying one IMHO.

I do not think that very many people would think about this.
