Default Corvette Z06 is country's 4th most stolen car. How?

Reading the paper today, some car theft stats from insurance companies were revealed, and on the list of the cars MOST likely to be stolen (proportionate to how many are in circulation), the corvette Z06 was fourth! I was under the impression that these corvettes were very rarely stolen, but it seems the oppsoite - it's more common than almost all other makes and models.

How do they actually get stolen? Flatbed trucks? Are they typically stolen from the home/garage (ie targeted theft), or when parked (ie opportunity)?

(FWIW, it also noted that the average insurance payout for these thefts was $41k)

If you read this article carefully you will see that this list is NOT a lost of the most stolen cars but rather those with the highest CLAIM rate. That is, those whose claims result is the highest $$ amount. The Escalade is far from the most stolen vehicle (as is the Z06) but it has the highest insurance claim value. If you go to the vehicle theft statistics sites you will that the usual suspects are the top ten (no Z06s even close). For example, this is the list for 2008:

Rank Year/make/model
1 1994 Honda Accord
2 1995 Honda Civic
3 1989 Toyota Camry
4 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
5 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
6 2000 Dodge Caravan
7 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
8 1994 Acura Integra
9 1999 Ford Taurus
10 2002 Ford Explorer
Source: National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Most vette owners never let let their cars out of their sight. I know whoever comes to my house for my car better duck from the hail of .223 rounds.

Well it just makes the value of the Corvette go up...
That what it means. Supply and demand... ..

Excellent catch. Following is the quote from the original source (The Highway Loss Data Institute). I suppose this is why we should read more than the headlines which I will admit I am often guilty of doing.

"New to the worst list: The Chevrolet Corvette Z06, a high-performance midsize sports car, isn't stolen nearly as often as the other vehicles on the worst list, but claims are expensive when the Z06 does go missing. The average size of an insurance claim payment is $41,229. This compares with $10,118 for a Dodge Charger with a HEMI engine, a large family car that makes the worst list mainly because of how often it’s stolen."
