Valentine 1 Hardwire Install Help

Valentine 1 Hardwire Install Help
I have tried all day today to wire the V1 into the mirror harness of my 05, it does not have onstar but does have automatic dimming. I have looked up bugmans write up and the following happens:
Using a voltimeter I can get a 12v reading off of the wires specified (black and pink) when the ignition is on.
The V1 will not power on at all when using this power source, I have had it plugged in and have checked the voltage in the wires and they are 12v.
If I use a lighter cord, the V1 will turn on, if I us my spliced phone cord without having the extra two wires, (so just the green (pos) and red (neg) connected) through the lighter plug that V1 supplies, it will turn on. It will not turn on in any other case.
Is this some problem that anyone is familiar with? Mine is a brand new unit and I noticed they sell a special V1 hardwire supply kit so I am wondering if there is some type of wiring that will only allow you to use there stuff. Thanks.

Chris,
I'm pretty sure you'll need the hardwire kit. I have had the V1 hard wire kit set up for other vehicles and the 12v wiring goes into the hardwire kit and the phone cord comes out of the hardwire kit. I don't have it set up at the moment so I don't know what voltage is coming out of the phone cord coming out of the hardwire kit.
My Corvette is on order so I haven't actually set it up on a Corvette yet. Hopefully it will come in in the next couple of weeks so I can start setting things up.
Good luck!
John

There is nothing special that you need. I got one of these just to make things easier...

When you say you 'have it plugged in' to the mirror as the 12V/G source, how exactly are you plugging in?
Did you get the Easy Power or Invisicord cable for the V1?
If you are using either of these are you getting the pins fully seated in the backside of the mirror's connector, as per Bugman's directions?
And is the color code correct? On my Invisicord I had to use the heat-shrink color not the wire color to ID the +12V wire.
And once the pins are in are you using cable ties to keep the pins from wiggling lose and losing contact?
If you reverse polarity the V1 will not power up even though you are reading 12V's in the cable.
If all of the above is being done correctly, I'm stumped.

Yeah, I agree. Make sure the pins are shove all the way into that plastic connector that goes on the back of the mirror. Also are you trying to do this with the door open. Sometimes mine will shut off with the door open, then turn on as the door closes.

I used an Invisicord for my V1 to tap into the back of my Vette's rear view mirror. Just followed their instructions and in a few minutes, worked perfect. I'd recommend this if you want to use the mirror as the supply.
I have used the V1 hardwire kit to tap into the sunroof power feed in my truck. That is a different connection.

Don't know if this is relevant or not but I had the same problem when I first attempted to wire my V1 to the mirror plug in my '08 coupe with an Invisicord. I reread the instructions about 10 times, checked all the posts on the subject here on the forum that I could find and still could not get it to power up except with the lighter plug. Finally, out of desperation and thinking that I had tried everything else, I ordered a replacement Invisicord - and guess what? With the new cord installed to the mirror plug, it powered right up. I had a defective Invisicord.
And you do not need to use the kit that comes with the V1. A working Invisicord is all that you need.

I made my own 'inviscord' from an old telephone cord, and made a few extra for fellow forum members.
Make sure you have the polarity correct, as they don't work with it reversed. Also, make sure you are getting good contact with the harness.

I created my own inviscord and figured out that the telephone wire connectors are not created equal. Look carefully and you'll notice one side is inverted. You can see the color coding inside the clear connector.

Get the Dashtronix module... It works like a charm, 2 plugs and your all good not to mention it displays the readout on your HUD if you have it or your DIC if you don't, either way it's a win win and it's totally plug and play and completely hidden.
