Default Broken Glove Box handle

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get the glove box opened. The handle broke off on Friday and I have not had a chance to look at it yet. I did call the dealer and they ordered one for me and it came in yesterday.

Be sure to save the lock cylinder from the broken latch to transfer over to the new one...expensive otherwise.
And do a search for "broken glove box", lots of threads like this: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...box-latch.html

Funny you should ask. My 07 vert broke completely off last week. After buying a new mechanism in cashmere last Friday (retail ~$51), it became clear to me how it worked and thus how to open the broken old latch. With the outer broken plastic beauty latch no longer in place, you will see an L shape shiny metal piece on the right side of the remaining latch mechanism. Take a pair of pliers and grab the bottom of the L piece and pull outward while using your other hand to gently pull open the door. It is real easy once that beauty piece is no longer covering up the rest of the mechanism.

What is painful is removing the lock tumbler and reinstalling in the new latch mechanism. Hopefully the earlier posted instructions will work better than my trial & error method which I can't describe here.

This seems to be an ongoing problem.

Seems to happen more often on late '07s and early '08s; perhaps a bad batch from a supplier. I replaced mine last month.

Maybe bad chemistry for a batch of those plastic latch pieces. Too brittle during cold weather.

What I don't understand is that it seems as if it is all one color. We sell a ton more of cashmere than we do any other color. Also, we sell a lot of Hummer parts and on the H3's we sell the cashmere 3 times per day, but not ebony/black??

Carbon black is a reinforcing ingredient in rubber, perhaps they use it in plastics as well, but being black have to leave it out on cashmere colored latches, hence their not as strong.

Maybe it has something to do with the paint being applied to the plastic?

Dealer had to replace the one on the '08 I bought. It does not close all they way so the light stayed on till it burned out. I could not find any adjustment screws.

Thanks for the info. gonna go out see if I can get it opened. Glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem, but sad to see it looks like another of GM's lack of attention to detail.

You can adjust the lid by installing washers under the latch assembly. This moves the latch farther from the door and therefor sets the door closer to the dash. Worked for me. There is no other adjustment.

Add another 08 C6 Cashmere lock that just broke with 11,000 miles. I don't think I used the glove compartment latch more than a half a dozen times.

My chasmere latch broke 2 weeks ago. Ordered a black one (cheaper than cashmere) and had it sent to TKO for carbon fiber to match the other pieces of my interior. Hope this ends this problem.

My 2006 cashmere glovebox handle broke a few days ago. I'm making a new one out of steel. I'll post picks when I'm done.

my 08 titanium broke twice. the second time i just left it broke. if you take your index finger, from the drives side it's easier, slide it in behind where the old latch was and you can feel the above mentioned metal latch and just flip it out like you would pull the latch. pops right open and i figured i could open it and nobody else could so i liked it broke ok...
