That #*%# plastic glove box latch!

My early 08 cashmere just broke in my father's gorilla hand. Although I know I can make the replacement one (due in soon) last forever, I must say, what a hunk o' junk totally not worth $40. For $40+ dollars it should be made of unobtainium! Sheesh! I'm hoping they have improved the design a bit since 2007.
Wow...

I see some of you referenced swapping the lock cylinder. I have a different issue but need to swap over the cylinder due to interior color change. Any guidance here? Thanks

Put the key in the hole and unlock the lock. Release the latch and open the handle slightly, find the tiny hole along the cylinder body near the key end not the locking tip. Turning the key gently left and right until you see the little silver clip inside the hole. With a small flat screwdriver, lightly press on the catch while turning the key just enough to get the cylinder free. Now I didn't have any problem getting the cylinder out without it falling apart but to be safe I did it on a clean surface. Insert the cylinder into the new hole the same way that you took it out only in reverse. It should lock back in place. Easy...
edit: Don't do this until you have removed the entire latch from the car first.

I had written a long drawn out response but then I pulled out my old latch to have a look.
Is your donor box closed or open, locked or unlocked?
Not sure if you absolutely have to have the key to remove the cylinder but the box has to be open and the latch should be removed to work on it or you're probably going to have a real hard time finessing it apart.
The cylinder hole does have two holes for the cylinder catch release, one up top and one at 90 degrees right. I suppose it's conceivable that with steady hands and a decent set of jewelers screwdrivers, you could get the cylinder out without having to drill it out.
If the box is locked and closed you might have only one option - drill it in a gentle vise. If it's locked but open I'd grab a soldering iron and melt the back part of the lock then go the jewelers screwdrivers route and pop the cylinder out. Either way it would seem to me you have options.

Ok, so mine broke today too. It just split into two pieces and the glove-box doesn't open any more. My car is a 2008 with 13,800 miles and grey interior. Luckily I bought extended warranty last year. Is this something that would be covered under the warranty?

User error, huh guys?
2007 C6 Z51 M6.....bought brand new. I open the glove box - NEVER. 2-3x per year.
Titanium gray interior. Latch was replaced under warranty with less than 20k miles on the car -- about 2.5 years ago.
It just broke off AGAIN today, in my wife's hand as she went to put the new insurance card in there.
What a piece of crap.

I wonder if something else besides operator error or the flimsy part, is causing the breakage? Like some other part in the system putting excessive strain on the tab?
We had a Titanium 2006 for 3 yrs/44k miles, and now a Cashmere 2009 for 3 yrs/47k miles, never broke the latch even though we use the glove box rather often. We're careful with it, but not unusually so.
Go figure...

mine broke this week
cashmere - definitely not operator error
very cheap part and the cashmere color maybe had a flaw in the process.
will try extended warranty just to bug chevy/GM - someone suggested recall - good luck
they will not redesign that part

My first post here and not happy that it's under these circumstances but I too have joined this not so exclusive club.
The latch broke in my hand when try to open the glove box on our 2006 C6. Cashmere, of course. I was unaware of this problem until searching the web and found this thread.
Here's the rub, the glove box is stuck closed and the cylinder fell out when the latch broke. While I thought the glove box was unlocked when I opened it, I can't be certain.
Is there a way to open the glove box without damaging it or is this best just taken to the dealer?
(Also, I cry foul on the user error comments. This car is babied 1000% and only has 6,385 miles on it.)
Thanks for any help.
