Default My top is stuck half way down

I was lowering my convertible top and it froze half way down. Or I should say the lid is half way down the top went all the way. I checked the battery, the fuses (I think based on the cheat sheet since the manual is in the truck and I can't get to it). Any suggestions? Such a bummer since I was letting my daughter take it to prom with her boy friend. They had to take the Mercedes instead. I know they would have preferred the vette.

Haven't seen this happen in exactly the way you describe but there is a small switch that prevents the top from retracting if the back wall of the top's storage area is unsnapped and not in place. I could see where it is possible that when the top dropped into it's compartment it might have dislodged that back wall and disengaged the switch.

Excellent point. However I can't open the truck to check that with the lid half open right? Is there a bypass for the trunk.

My '05 has key access above the license plate.

There s/b enough room to reach in/ check it from inside the car... Pull the passenger seat back all the way forward. The sensor is located on the passenger side of the car. You should be able to reach in at actually pull the partition toward you to reattach it. If possible also try not to store anything too bulky beneath it or on it that may cause it to come unsnapped. Someone should create something that makes the connection more secure... This has happened to me on a few occasions. I learned how to prevent it, travel light! I've also read disconnecting/ reconnecting the battery could cause this... Always remember to index your windows after reconnecting your battery.

Will the top go back up now or is everything stuck?

Okay. Was able to open the trunk. Popped off and reconnected the truck sheild. Changed out the battery because I do think it was part of the problem, at least it died a couple times on me so I think it was time. Still nothing. Tried to just manually close the top. No go it stuck.

I keep thinking there is a safety switch telling it to not work. When I press the up and down button the dash reacts saying it's in accessary mode, or top is not secured so I don't think the switch is bad or a blown fuse. Which I did check.

You might try re-indexing the windows . . . the top won't operate if the windows aren't working properly.

There is a limit switch on the passenger side where the bow linkage crosses itself. It may have become dislodged.

Yes on the parking brake (even obvious suggestion are appreciated ;-))
I will re-index the windows now (you mean where I roll them up and hold it for a few seconds right)
Can you describe the limit switch more? I'm so thinking it will be something like that.

They aren't obvious if you don't know that the e-brake has to be engaged for certain things to work. Someone searching this thread in a year for the same problem might run out to his garage and it solves the problem.

When I first got my car I couldn't get certain things to work because the e-brake wasn't engaged. Learned my lesson then and thought it was a possibility. Glad you got it resolved.

On the passenger side under the carpet is the hydraulics for the top. When you bought the car it should have come with an Allen key. If you need to manually move the top you need to pull back the carpet, locate the pressure release screw that the Allen key will fit in and release the pressure. Once you have released the pressure you can manually move the top. Just remember to tighten the screw again. Also after a certain amount of time you should be able to manually move the top as well.

It could have also been the partition switch, like someone else mentioned. We had a car do the exact same thing and replaced the switch and everything work as it should.

You are so right. When I first got the car I was at a stop and could not figure out why the top wouldn't go down. I checked everything and finally locked the top again and drove off. Duh, parking brake wasn't on. Thanks again

That's what ended up happening. It sat long enough to lose the pressure and I put it all back together. Reindex the windows and everything is working again. Thanks.

Does anybody read their owners manual? It's very clear in there how to manually put up/down a non functioning power top.

I couldn't get to the manual. It was in the storage bin in my truck.
