Default Fuel gauge went from 1/2 tank to zero in 1 minute!

I have an 08 Z06 with 8000 miles on it. I have my drag radials on for the 1.5 hour drive to the track and 40 minutes into it, the warning "Service Fuel System" comes on. I reset it thinking its a gas cap problem that I had in my 07 coupe. Then it says "Low Fuel" and the fuel gauge reads zero! It was 1/2 full a minute ago! The car is running fine and just prior to this trip I had added fuel to obtain a half tank and then driven for 30 minutes home. This started after I left home.

Anybody heard of this? I turned around and drove 40 minutes home with "no" fuel.

Might be as simple as some bad gas. The general recommendation is to run a bottle or 2 of Techron through the system before you get too upset.

The fuel tank has two lobes, and I believe two level senders (one on each side). The total fuel level is determined by some combination of readings, so it would seem that you are experiencing a sensor or wiring problem.

I had the same thing with my wife's Infiniti. It was the fuel in her case. Happened right after we stopped for gas off the highway.

Immediately and do not pass go, pick up two bottles of Techron fuel system additive and add it to your tank at the next two fill-ups.

Thanks Guys

I put in half a a tank of 91 octane fuel at a Shell station and drove for about 30 minutes, stopped for a couple of hours then drove 40 minutes when it happened. At the fuelling, I was almost empty, so maybe some debris got picked up.

I will try Techron tomorrow. I will let you know. The car runs fine otherwise.

This has been a common problem since the C5. There are TSB's that address the issue.

This used to happen to the C5s in our club. Marvel Mystery Oil or Techron takes care of it in most cases. Hope it works for you too.

Problem was corrected.

I put in Slick 50 gas treatment and then Techron in the same tank.

While my car was having headers installed they reset the ECM and the problem disappeared.

I do not know if the fuel treatments did it or the ECM reset.

Well, my 05 C6 tank needle goes down to zero gas when my tank hits half a tank of gas... From full to half it's fine... When the needle goes down the "SERVICE FUEL SYSTEM" message comes on and the "CHECK ENGINE ICON LIGHT" comes on as well... If you fill the car up, the message goes away and start the car up twice and the "CHECK ENGINE ICON LIGHT" goes out... I went through the gas cap replacement twice... over the last year. Well, I guess I'll try the "Techron" route is it the Chervron TECHRON COMPLETE FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER 20oz that I need? Thanks for the great info over the years...!!!

I had that problem and I had to change the fuel sender and the fuel pump in the tank. Thank god I had an extended warranty. It was not cheap

I have always been skeptical about mechanic in a bottle but when it can't hurt I will give an occasional try. 2 bottles of Techron thru mine and my gas gauge went back to working. It may just be putting off having to remove the tank but I'm good with that.

Yes, that's it. Not the Fuel Injection Cleaner.
