Today we had 70°F temps and there was no problem at all. It seems to be worse when it's warm.

I have the same sound coming back. something is making me think it is not the compressor... May be an alternator or something... Only happens under hard acceleration between 3K and 3.4k rpm...

@berk4422:

When comparing the symptoms, I'm sure that you have a different problem.

Did anybody try replacing just the compressor clutch instead of the entire A/C compressor?

I have no problem fixing an issue with my car but I hate bringing it to a dealership that will overcharge me. If I can find the root cause of the issue from people who had this issue previously, I'll go to a shop and request they only swap out that specific part.

My 07 z06 is doing the same thing now at 38k miles. Weird noise when i let off the clutch pedal from 1st to 2nd and feel it under my foot. Right when i turn the AC off, the clutch feel goes back to normal and noise goes away. So what exactly is the problem so i can tell my mechanic to get it fixed?

Dangit, I've got the whine too.... Had it on another car that I traded. Current car didn't have the whine and now it does...... Can you change the bearings or must one change the whole compressor?

I've got 89K on the clock....

Interesting... Azone sells a replacement bearing: http://www.autozone.com/cooling-heat...mString=search

Now I wonder where you can find someone to replace just that? This video makes it look somewhat "non-trivial", at least for me:
