best wheel cleaner
Whats the best wheel cleaner... I got rust / break dust /grime ect... (its on a non-vette). I figured eveyone here would know teh best stuff to use. I tried like some pollish stuff and had to buff like crazy...didn't really come out...
I figured I should practice on my daily so I'll be ready for my vette soon.
Oh ya...hoping its something over the counter not something I need to order in...wanted to work on them this weekend.

Simple Green Concentrated Cleaner or 409. Both work very well and will not harm the chrome finish. Spray the wheels and let them soak for 3-5 minutes. Then hose them off. Depending on how dirty they are you may need a sponge or tire brush to scrub a little bit. Dawn dish detergent will work in a pinch too.

I have had great results with Adams all purpose cleaner. I have used them on powder coated and polished wheels and have not had anything but great results. Wet the wheels then spray and let it sit for a few seconds then use a soft bristled brush or a rag to wipe the wheel then spray it off. It will rally clean the barrel of course you just need something to wipe in there. It takes no effort to on the barrel if you get their barrel cleaner tool. You can use it with a drill but I use it by hand because the cleaner works.

Melting Slicks
I've used Simple Green in the past but recently tried Mequiars Chrome wheel cleaner and it's so good it cleaned the inside barrels of a years grime--looks like new. I still needed a little kerosene for the tar globs but try the Meguiars. I also bought a bottle for my new painted wheels and it seems to work super on them too.

car wash soap and water and then apply NXT 2.0 wax. Afterwards use the armour all wheel protectant. Have not washed my wheels in ten days and they still look fresh washed and waxed. Drive it everyday.

For brake dust and general grim, I've used Mother's Foaming Wheel Cleaner with good success for an OTC product. Works better than the Duragloss Wheel Cleaner I have too.
For rust, which I question on an aluminum wheel (corrosion perhaps?), there is nothing you can do except sand it away and repolish or paint, whichever the finish on your wheel.

I have a Zo6 with oem brakes and polished alloy wheels. They produce much brake dust. I use car wash soap and water, lots of it--every week. Car is almost six years old with 30K miles and the wheels look new with the exception of a few dings.

Armour-NOT
I have a GS '10 with usual dust. Started with soap and water, then use Rejex (twice) + brake capiper covers (red on silver car=cool) on original pads and have not cleaned emaculate wheels for 6 weeks. If desire, can dust with a small Caliif. triangular duster. Takes 2 minutes each 6 weeks.

I have learned to be much more careful with my wheels since I got the Corvette. I used to scrub with a stiff brush and harsh cleaners. Now I use one of those gentle "safe for all wheels" cleaners first, then wash all surfaces with a wash mitt that I only use on the wheels. I dry with a cotton terry towel and use rejex. My wheels look so much better these days. And yes, I do wash inside the wheels as well.
