Not an idle question: I'm asking because we're looking at a 2012 with both tops and we'd be driving it home from the museum ...

Brooklyn hit it. There isn't much room left. The window meets the deck right where the end of the top rests in the cradle. Can't really put anything under it, and if you want to put stuff over it, it will be forward and right behind the seats.

Soft-side baggage might get you a bit near the rear bulkhead.

When I picked up my 07 coupe in Washington, DC that had two tops, I put in 2 golf bags and 4 golf shoes beneath the top, two small soft sided luggage bags in front and a bunch of shopping from an outlet mall and drove for 10 hours.

About 8-9" under the front of the stowed roof, maybe a inch or two more at the highest point 1/3 back from the front (in the middle as the sides will be lower) and less than 6" at the rear of the stowed roof. There is about 12-15" in front of the stowed roof (behind the seats) that is not covered by the roof itself so you much more height over that area.

I didn't actually go out and measure but this is it in general. There is room above the roof to the back window that you can use but you had better pad the roof well to avoid scratches. If you pack a soft bag, you can empty the contents and spread them around to fit (I've done this) if there is not enough room in the area in back of the seats.

Hope that helps.

I can fit several small soft sided overnight bags, plus two fold up chairs in bags (like you see at a car show...not the fold up lawn chairs), a soft side for detailing supplies and then couple light coats etc is remaining spaces. Its not a large space but with correct bags (small soft sides) and careful packing you can probably fit what you need for the trip back from BG.

Crappy, but useful - thanks, Ed!

I'm glad I asked: placement is way different from my C4, despite being the same basic idea.

you could look at Top Shield for the roof panel - it is padded, fits over the top so you can store items on the top. Have one, fits nice, haven't used it yet! (yes - chicken, not really - no call for use yet! ok a little)

Soft bags will carry enough for that two/three day trip, unless your wife packs like mine.

Oh, soft stuff also fits under the stowed top also.

Here's some measurements I did a few years ago:

The first post in the link is the useful one. There is some commentary in that thread about cracks in the transparent top from packing too tightly, but that turned out not true in my case- there apparently was a run of defective transparent tops around 2006-2007, I had two others crack after being on the car for just a short time, never stored in the trunk.

I have a nice garment bag that I use to use when flying for work. I just leave it flat rather than folding it up and there is plenty of room for the wife and I to travel for a nice week long vacation. The bag unfolded fits perfectly between the wheel wells. There is plenty of room but soft luggage is the trick.
Now, "plenty of room" is compared to when we take the motorcycle on trips!!!!

You stole my thunder. Socks, shoes and other small stuff fits in the two cubby holes all the way in the back.

Just bring a couple back packs and everything will be good or a soft gym bag usually fits behind the seat. That is one thing I do love about the Vert, more room when the top is stowed. (Same amount as when you started the trip).
