Default How do you remove wheel weight glue/goo

got some new michelin's today, wheel weights were of course repositioned.
How do you get all the leftover goo, rubbery glue stuff? discount tire diddn't get it all off. I don't want to harm any coating that may be on the barrels.
Anyone done it? experiences? what to avoid?

Some of that adhesive is really thick and difficult to remove. You'll probably have to use a razor blade to scrape of the heavy and then use something like 3M adhesive remover or googone which really isn't much help here. It will be a fight regardless.

I used an old ice scraper with mineral spirits, worked fine & did not harm the finish on my chrome wheels.

Just go easy with whatever method you use...

Wheel weights removed...finish damaged

I was just doing this the other night. Stuff is really hard to get off. I was trying WD-40, Goo Gone - neither was working well. I was also trying to use a plastic scraper, didn't want to damage the paint on the barrel.

I never did get it all off - I was tired of dealing with it.

Goobegone was designed for this, but most people don't have it. However if you remove most of it with a plastic scraper or your fingernail, the remaining gunk will come off with something you likely do have in your house - WD40.

WD40 also works great for road tar, bugs, any sort of really stubborn stain on your paint. It will strip any wax on the surface but won't hurt the clearcoat or paint so long as you use a gentle cloth. Just use a soft rag, rinse everything with soap and water when done, and remember to re wax.

I used a little gas on a rag and just rub it over and over. It will come off a little at a time. Re-wax when you are done. Finish will be fine. I did not use any kind of scraper for fear of scratching the finish.

Permatex Gasket Remover. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes and wripe it off with a rage, goo all gone. Be warned though if your barrels are painted the paint comes off too.

I remove weights and clean the wheels before swapping tires, to ensure the best balance job I can get. I also go back after a 1000 miles or so, to get a rebalance. Maybe I'm a little **** about balance, but my balance guy is even more **** than me. He says if the tire is rated for 186 mph and the car is capable of that speed, then he better make sure the balance is good for that speed.

I've been putting it off too long now and I guess it's time to get to it. Expecting a rainy Sunday courtesy of Irene, will give me something to focus on.

I'll give mineral spirits a shot!

thanks for the ideas on how to get rid of that wheel weight glue..

I've seen it on my rims too and never get around to tackle that task..

Now maybe I'm more motivated.

Lots of good ideas..

Good info and discussion all. I think i'll first try the heat gun, see what I can get off softening up the thicker stuff. Worst case, I like the touch up paint idea.

Of course, I'll have to get motivated. When my garage won't get much below 95, even in the middle of the night, it's harder to get out there and work the elbow grease. hmmm maybe a good fall, football on the garage tv project...

I agree.

OMG John. What happened to your avatar? Now RACER can top it. The other one was his constant challenge and an inspiration to everyone else.
