Whats the reasoning for oil change every 3-5K with Mobile 1?

I can remember when you were supposed to change the oil every 1,000 miles and the filter every 5,000, which never made much sense to me. Engines, filters (air and oil) and engine oils have come a long way since then. Living in a temperate part of the country, storing my car in a garage, and driving my Vette regularly year around, I follow the advise given on the DIC, but ignore the yearly change advise.

If you just drive normal street driving then just follow the DIC. I change mine about twice a year though no matter what. Once before the driving season and once before winter. I just don't want to waste time changing it during driving season.

If you were talking about service B on a Mercedes my wife s GL 450 service B was $1100 . All fluids have been changed .God bless the germans !

Not sure who at Chevrolet has "recommended" 3k oil changes to you but your owners manual (written by Chevrolet) tells you to change the oil when your oil life monitor tells you to, or once per year.

Chevrolet dealerships need the money for auto services because they are hurting badly..that's why. A corvette oil change is about $80 and if every owner adheres to their suggestion, they could make some real money just changing oil every 3-5k. The bottom line is pay attention to your DIC and get it changed when it says you need to do it.

Pure marketing hype. My BIL used to work in one of Ford's Dyno plants testing engines, and they simulate some pretty tough driving conditions. He was the one that really pushed me into following the mfr's recommendations, which he says are conservative to begin with. Anything sooner is just a waste of money.
I have a 2000 Mustang GT with 225K on it, and have only used synthetic in it. It is changed about every 10K-13K and the engine is still tight and barely burns a quart of oil in between changes.

Hey JLargo... Thanks! I do get a lot of compliments on the car. Very different from the "chrome-laden" Vettes that you see at most car shows and cruise nights.
When the wife said... "That's the one I want!", I wasn't going to put up much of a fight!

With the merc you can just request oil change instead of A service...about 90-100 bucks then. Will not void warranty - at least it does not for me.

I know what the manual says, and what some people do, some change it every 3000 others change it when the DIC or 1 yr...
Being that I run my car very HARD (Drag Race) it will make 10-15 (1/4 mile runs) on any given weekend.. I change the oil & filter every 5000 miles.. (the DIC usually says 50%) but I'm taking the engine to 6500 rpm 10 - 15 times a week maybe 3 weeks a month...
I think its good insurance to do it a little sooner then later..
To be honest if I were only driving it on long road trips at 2000-2500 RPM with no short trips or no stop & go I would let it go longer between oil changes... I average 2-3 oil changes a yr.

GMOLS is your friend....................
Change your oil (0% remaining) as displayed on your DIC, or at the one (1) year time interval maximum per the owners manual.

My DIC is living in the 1970's.
I follow the DIC on my 2006 coupe.
But my oil change interval is about every 3k-4k miles.
My BMW 3 series synthetic interval was 15k.
Go figure.

Yep, I'm stuck in the 70's and still change my synthetic oil when I feel it needs it.
Not the 10K that the car or "dealer" says.
I like my car clean, inside and out.
BTW: I changed my oil frequently in the first 6K miles. I should have taken pictures of the tiny bits of metallic stuff on the magnetic plug.

The C6 Vettes have an oil life monitor. Change oil when prompted (i.e. oil life monitor says 0% life left) or once per year.
I, too, had the belief that oil should be changed every 3K miles. With modern engines, lead-free gas and synthetic oil, this is probably no longer applicable. I am stretching out the change interval on one of our other cars using Mobil 1 too.

They have notified me that my 2009 Traverse needs to have different oil life program loaded because they started having some "premature" failure concerns. So, should I trust they got it right on my LS3 that is perhaps put through a little more than a family vehicle? Not me.
Even without the GM changes to the oil life expectancy, I don't mind changing the oil within 5000 miles, and have so far gotten it done within 3000 miles (which turns out to be yearly). Call me overly cautious, but oil and filters are a whole lot cheaper now than engine parts will be a few years from now.
