C6 sun visor with vanity mirror

C6 sun visor with vanity mirror
The hinges on our driver's side vanity mirror (on sun visor) broke. I tried unsuccessfully at first to take the bulb out. I finally just took the lights out and guess what? When I went to crank the car the next morning, it wouldn't crank. Apparently the car thinks the light is still on. So I have had to rig it to push the light button down to keep it "off". The price at the dealer for a new sun visor with vanity mirror is $364.28 plus labor to put it in. I thought that was a little over the top. He said the light could not be disabled. Anyone else know anything about this? Unfortunately, it wasn't still under warranty. Thanks.

My hinges broke too. But I kludged a fix by taking out the bulbs and sticking the cover on with 3M tape.

Replacing the visor is easier but way more expensive than it ought to be.

Well my driver side vanity mirror cover just broke too, but only one side of the hinge so it's still connected but floppy hanging by one side.
FYI, I couldn't figure why it broke because I've probably only opened the cover up 2 times since I bought the car new in 2009
Once I started looking to fix it, I realized when you push the Visors up, the vanity covers hit/rest against the locking handles for the Targa top.
In My case, I now realize when I push the button/s on the visor to open the garage door, I was putting excess pressure on the visor/vanity mirror cover against the Targa top locking handle
That's why mine broke.
I can't believe the light is Always Hot no matter what!
Anyway, put some drops of Gorilla glue on the area right where the hinge pin broke and closed the cover.
Then held the cover in place with a long tie wrap around the whole Visor and put a few more drops of glue on it from the outside.
Fixed for now, sorta
IF, is was/is possible to get just a new mirror cover, it can simply be hooked back on

well there are those on this forum who dont quite understand why or how these things break but truth be told GM used tiny plastic hinges on something that should have been metal and crafted a little bit more durably.
anyway, what i did was remove the mirror completely and have the visor wrapped in leather by an upholsterer. it will cost less that it does to replace the entire visor because you cannot just purchase the mirror or that cover.
you can also attempt to fix that hinge like it sounds that you did. i was able to fabricate a hinge and insert a part of a paper clip to make it work. but i the perfectionist in me really wasnt happy with it. now i have no mirror and nothing to break.

Yes, mine broke too.
For all those reading this thread; Yes, a few dops of oil on the hinges ever so often is good advise.
I've velcro'd my cover on.
Yet the sun's heat undo's the velcro adhesive and the cover (if in a vertical position) falls to the floor...so I'd call this repair attempt a fail.
So options are to replace for $400, try to fabricate a new hinge, re-cover (as mentiond above) without a mirror, or secure the cover in place w/ glue (or double stick tape also mentioned) permanently.

This is what I did.....where the plastic pin broke I took a dremel tool and cut a channel. After doing this I took a stainless steel finishing air nail and cut it approx 1" I then mixed up a batch of West Systems Epoxy and filler (filler used for holding hardware on boat decks) I put the nail in the channel through the spring finger of the lid and then vaselined any surface I did not want Epoxy on. Spread the epoxy and closed the lid and taped it shut. After it cured, I painted it has held in place for over a year now....total cost of repairs....$1

The best way to shut the light off for good, is to remove the visor, and unplug the connector. Remove the cover and your good to go.
There is a fix for the broken hinge but most times, it doesn't last because of the strain the spring hinge puts on the plastic hinge or the repaired hinge.
I replaced my vanity mirror with a back up camera. I never used the vanity mirror anyway.
I do have a "new" driver side ebony sunvisor complete with vanity mirror and a perfect cover. However, the sunvisor does not have the homelink (garage door Opener) but could be fitted with the one on your broken cover sunvisor.
PM me if any of you are interested in the driver sunvisor.

Vanity mirror cover replacement
I ordered replacements on EBay. Less than $50 each. Used small hemostats aka roach clip curved at the end. Pryed up retaining clip with the hemos closed. Worked great! Done in five minutes.

Two things:
1) You can start a new thread instead of reviving a 2 year old thread.
2) Replacing a piece of $hit cover with a new one will only break again over time. There are other options that will never have to be fixed again.
