Just returned from a visit to the dealer, they pulled the code and need to order a front impact sensor. I asked about why it happens at high speeds and they had no idea, guess as long as it is fixed before my event at Daytona next month with Hooked On Driving is all I really care about. Something tells me the car will see speeds of over 150 on that track.

A TSB doesn't obligate the dealership to repair anything nor does it mean a TSB repair would be paid-for under the warranty. A TSB is not a recall. If the dealership can't replicate a problem they may not be willing to 'repair' something under the warranty. You could have them make a repair as set forth in a TSB but you may be paying for it.

2008 manual coupe, red air light bag goes on at WOT above 100+ speeds. I turn off the ignition and the light stays off upon restart. I have done many 1-3 WOT runs and no light, it only occurs when into triple digit speeds.

Dealer had the car for a few days and they talked with GM tech support, they claim they have never heard of a problem like this.
They checked all connectors ( including under the seat ) and have now decided to replace the airbag control unit. It will take a few days for the part to come in, I will keep my fingers crossed that this takes care of the problem but it sounds like a stab in the dark.

Problem seems to be fixed.

They replaced the airbag control unit a few days ago and I took the car up to 155MPH today and no light!

You really don't need to tell them how fast you were going. I had my car in for a headlight issue the other day. The mechanic came out asked me if I knew there were a whole bunch of SIR history codes on the car and wanted to know if I had any airbag issues. I said don't worry about them. The car doesn't like it when I put my race seats in place of the stock seats. They will reset before next track season and then get set all over again.

My dealer is cool and knows I took the car to the 1/4 miles and Daytona. I only told them about it happening at high speed to help them with troubleshooting the problem.
I agree that if you have a dealer that won't work with you don't mention the speed, mine is cool about it. The service writer has a older 1970's Corvette so he understands that I use the car for what it was made for.

I disregard the light when it shows after every time I've exceeded 130. It always goes off the next start cycle.

103K miles on the car and over 300 1/4mi passes in the 120-126 mph range and the light never goes on under 130 mph.

If it was a "real" problem with the airbag system, it wouldn't wait for a high speed run to activate and it wouldn't reset itself either.

One question here..... While the light is on is the system disabled? If so, that's not good....

My occasional light seems to be tied to the seat connector in the rear. I've got to get in there and tighten that up as others have suggested.

According to this website the airbags will not deploy if the red fault light is on.

Yup. It says "First and foremost if the airbag light is on or flashing, the SRS system is inactive. ".

This should be a safety recall with all the people troubled by this. Who's to say that even though the light is OFF that at the point of an impact (crash) the system becomes disabled?

This could be caused by a loose, missing, or broken Connector Position Assurance (CPA) retainer at the Air Bag for the set DTC.

If loose, remove the connector and reinstall correctly by first pushing the connector body in completely and then pushing in the CPA retainer completely. If the CPA is broken, missing or will not seat in the connector correctly, replace the CPA retainer with P/N 54590003 (Orange CPA) that is located in the SIR Repair Tray (J-38125-SIR) of the terminal repair kit.

If the CPA retainer P/N 54590003 (Orange CPA) cannot be located in the terminal repair kit, contact Kent Moore Tools @ 1-800-GM-TOOLS and order P/N 54590003-PKG to obtain a package of 5.
Good info here C6togo....mine just came on the other day.....so I shut the car down waited a bit, restarted and so far so good....but next time that happens I will show the dealer your info and get it fixed....thanks for the research and help....

Everyone with this problem should make an official complaint to the National Highway Safety Administration. Until they get enough complaints GM will do nothing about this safety issue. After several years my check air bag light started again. I contacted them today and the form is very simple and just takes a few minuets to fill out.

Assuming that's correct for a C6 and that the system disables itself after reaching 130 mph and doesn't reset until the next ignition cycle, then a panic stop from 140 mph and hitting a tree after you slowed to 80 means you're SOL. You'd have the same issue an hour after a high speed run while in city traffic if you didn't reset the system.

I can understand the system disable at really high speeds, but have doubts that it doesn't re-enable after you slow below the limiting speed.

Reading their website, it seems like they sell or broker some SRS components.

I'm suspicious of any blanket statement that the bag won't work if the light is on. My guess is that it depends on the reason for the light. Heck, I can recall some stories from years ago when someone had the light come on and several minutes later the airbag fired for no reason.

But regardless of the reason, I still would want the problem fixed ASAP.
