2008 fuel odor day after fill-up
Hi all,
I am new to this forum but have had a few Corvettes and just love them. I have driven my 2008 black corvette for 34,000 miles so far. My husband says I"m living on borrowed time with those miles. I say its been flawless so far and will go many many more. He's had many Corvettes but I don't think he realizes how reliable they are these days. Anyhow, can anyone help me with an issue I've notice two times now. I walked into my garage this morning and I smelled a strong fuel odor. My car is the only car that parks in the garage. I filled up yesterday although not all the way. This happened last time i filled up with no spillage whatsoever. I looked under the hood and didn't smell it there. I didn't search any further after the first time but now that its happened twice I'm starting to get concerned. Has anyone had any experience with this? Please help!!

Not a common issue. But it has been reported before:

This is definitely resolvable and you should get it taken care of ASAP!
And let us know what finally fixes it.
Check the EVAP canister vent hose up near the fuel neck to see if it came off. You may have to remove the inner rear fender to check this.
If not it could be the top of the fuel pump sending unit where it attaches to the tank. They use neoprene washers that can eventually loosen or wear. This happened in my 2007 Z06 and it took me forever to find. No fuel leaking because it was on the top of the tank. The smell was terrible though in the garage or enclosed places especially after fill ups. Had to drop the tank to eventually find and repair.

Just removed the wheel well liner. Evap hose was connected but I took it off anyway. It was over half full of gas. Took a small wire and cleaned out the connector. Washed the car and parked it in the garage. No smell of gas so far......will keep checking it today.
Hope just some dust from over filling clogged that evap connector. The hole is very small leading to the hose.

Take it to Watson Chev in the Auto Mall, they are the best for Vette work.
The car will still be covered under the 8 year 80k mile emissions warranty and a fuel leak, bad fuel pump connectors and gaskets are covered by that at no charge. Just tell them you are aware of the warranty and that you are afraid of fire danger from the leak.

Yay! Thanks for your input. Funny my husband works at Watson Chev. He works in the body shop so I was going to make him take this thing apart. However, before he gets to it, the car will be burnt to the ground so I will take it there and have them take a look at it. I don't know if other Chev dealerships do this but they have a Corvette only parking row so I don't have to worry about it. Thanks again!

I would suggest you ask for service writer Ziv Baker, he is knowledgeable on vettes and will make sure the tech that works on it is a Corvette tech. Been working with that dealership for parts and service for over 20 years and they take very good care of my car when I bring it in. Make sure you mention your husband works there and he was recommended by a happy long time customer.

Good Luck Dee.. I took my 08 (32.000 miles) for the same problem and had a heck of a time. The gas tank had a small seperation in the caulking where the fuel pump goes in. GM would not cover it did talk them in to covering parts. Let us know what happens........

Well its at the stealership right now and like you guys thought, so far they're not finding anything and will now drop the gas tank. I sure hope they find something there or else they'll charge me for that. I added more gas last night so that it went to 3/4 tank and the fumes were terrible this morning went I went into the garage. I sure hope they find something! I even printed out our thread here to help them identify the problem. I'll keep you posted.

I can tell you about issues with the C-5's in relation to this but this is the first I've heard about a C-6 with this issue. My '07 has been fume free for me.

Leaking fuel tank update
Well got my car back today! Although that Malibu rental car sure rode nice . They replaced the entire fuel pump assembly and are hoping that fixes it and it was covered under warranty thankfully! Since my husband works at the dealership in the body shop he went over to check on it from time to time and sent me a pic of the tank out of the car where it looked like it was leaking in several places for some time. I wish they were a little more proactive about calling me back with info but glad I've got it back and fixed...hopefully!

It would have been nice if they told you something like "Here is where it was leaking", pointing it out so you could have advised us. Thanks anyway for letting us know.

The fuel pump replacement has fixed it for others that had the fuel odor problem. I was sure that the 8 year 80k mile emissions warranty would cover it and that's why I posted that info earlier in the thread. Watson is the best for Vette work in the Tucson area and have used them for over 20 years for my Vettes.

I will tell you they do their best to get the items covered under warranty especially when it comes to Vettes. Their service techs get good $ on warranty items.

I will clarify my husband had to go over to check on the car because they hadn't been calling us but Ziv in the service dept was very nice when I did get hold of him. LOL!

Wow, this is some great info! Thanks! I now have a new found appreciation for the difficult job it would be to find a leak. This morning, no more smell in the garage, yay! Hopefully it stays that way. They got it all together then found the fuel gauge didn't work. They must have broken the fuel level sensor in the process of all their work and charged GM through warranty for the parts and labor Thank you all so much for the valuable info.
