Melting Slicks
Thanks, I think the last time i was in parts I was simply looking for one of those little Touch Up Paint containers that are a little bigger than a chapstick container. Thats why I asked why is a VIN needed. I had the name of the paint and the code. They still needed the VIN...

The only reason I went to the dealer was because I had already been several other places. Hardware store, Lowes, Wal Mart, and I was near the dealer after leaving Lowes. I figured the dealer would be expensive but never dreamed that expensive.
I will try the local locksmith shop next week and see if they can help me out.
Thanks again.

The fob for our 2010 Prius is $500 and the key is $105 with a $40 programming fee. I bought 7 vehicles at the dealer since 06 and they would not even program the fob as a customer satisfaction act. I did not purchase the fob. I have since found them on an internet site for $199 but only a dealer or locksmith with a special instrument can program them. They can not be programmed diy like the Corvette fob.
Told them they would never see me again as a customer. Bought three new vehicles since not from there and I took each one and showed them.

I saw on one web site doesn't look anything like an 08 Corvette key. It may be fine in a pinch but it isn't the correct key.
The Cadillac one shown in the link in the other post is the correct key.
Of course you still need to get it cut where the GM key comes already cut. You can get them from GM Parts House of Parts Taxi for a few dollars less than the dealer in this thread quoted.
Here is the info off the GM Parts House web site:
25995382 – 2008 Key (Does not come with FOB) – $44.82
Note: The 08 key blank is not as wide as the 07 key blank. With that said, the 08 key will not work in your 07 if your key code (cuts) contains any cuts with a #1 in the code. We don’t provide or retrieve key codes for customers who are not local to us. If you are unsure if your key has a #1 in the code please contact your dealer. On a visual note, you can tell if the key has a #1 cut in it if any of the cuts are as wide as the shaft of the key. Those are #1 cuts.
‘08 keys work in ‘07 locks, just need the new key traced. ’05 & ’06 customers will need to purchase a new lock set to use the new key.

Safety Car
Bill, the only point of the extra key for some of us is insurance against locking the fob in the car. We only need the key to be hidden on the car somewhere, not to fit in the fob. Two dollars or so is cheap for that purpose.
