Interval Oil Changes or Oil Life Remaining...which do you do?
Do you change your oil at intervals or go by the oil life remaining info from the Drive Info Center?
For me I’m old school, change every 5K miles with 1 Qt Lucus and the rest with Mobil 1. When I changed my oil this week, I noticed the “Oil Life Remaining” was at around 65%. Kind of makes you think twice about changing the oil at 5K, but I do any way.
I figure an engineer with some log rhythm figured out when the oil life ends…and I suspect it’s pretty accurate, but old habits die hard and it’s every 5,000 miles for me.
How about you guys?

I dont put but 3 to 4000 miles a year on my Corvettes so I change the Oil and Filter one time a year late in the Fall before the Corvette is put down for the Winter...

I follow the driver info center. That's what my dealer told me to do. I do change once a year if I haven't driven enough though.

I like regular intervals that correspond to what GM requires for warranty purposes. The garage queens (07 vert & son's 08 coupe) get changed every year. The DDs get changed at set mileage intervals that correspond closely to what the OLMs would have allowed anyway. The 10 CTS Wagon OLM allows slightly more than 10k so I change every 10k. The 06Z and now the 11 ZR1 OLMs allow ~7500 miles so I change every 7500. I use AMSOIL ASL 15k severe service motor oil in all vehicles so I am very comfortable with these change intervals. Each to their own.

old school is just ignorance IMHO. People say they change for "peace of mind" and " what could it hurt". why not just take the money you are wasting by changing your oil too often and donate it to a local charity?

As I have said in other oil change threads, since I joined almost 11 years ago, the 3000 mile old school oil changers are really a thing of the past. Back in 2001 maybe, 75% were 3000 mile oil changers, now your lucky to find 20%, so MOST people are getting educated and realizing the times they are a changing.

I base my oil changes by the DIC. I don't drive my car 10,000 miles a year and my car doesn't get the oil changed annually either. I never had an engine fail because it didn't get the oil changed in the last 12 months. It takes about three years for the DIC to flag the oil.

I change it by mileage and depending on how it looks also.
Usually around 3-4K or once a year.
I only put about 3-3500 miles/year on my Vette.
