An "edit" regarding post #51:
Yesterday we got caught in some construction traffic on I75 north of Tampa. Turning on ch 19, it took a while but we finally got enough information to make the proper detour for our route. Nobody would actually talk to us, perhaps they think you're a weenie if you have less than 20 watts of transmitter. But listening for a while told us what we needed to know.
It seems like when the truckers have something important to discuss, the conversations become much more useful and intelligent. But when there's nothing going on; well, nature abhors a vacuum.

Just kinda skimmed this thread... Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the Cobra 75WXST is a nice concealable mount that has decent range. I've had this one and it is a nice, stealthy install.
I bet you could install it by the fuse box with little trouble. Then use an "add-a-circuit" from Autozone to power the unit.
If you go this route, install a secondary speaker - the factory speaker is on the handheld unit and is sometimes hard to hear.
With the Eckler's antenna mount, you should be set.

Ah ha I remember the Navaho Pro Base radio. Are you referring to the Sigma 5/8 base station antenna with the coil that is on the bottom.?
That Super Penetrator 5/8 wave antenna worked great. I think it worked better than the Sigma 5/8 which I also had. The Big Stik 1/2 wave antenna was the worst.
Remember the Astro Plane Antenna?

We have the 75WXST, with the Cobra auxiliary speaker sitting sideways on the ridge behind my seat, velcro'd to the sidewall.
I installed a cig lighter plug from Radio Shack, plug it into the power outlet in my console to use the CB. But be sure to turn the unit off at night, the outlet stays live.
We have a home made version of the Ecklers/MidAmerica antenna system, works well.

79 CB Radio
I had a 78 that came with a CB radio incorporated in the stock Stereo, the car had a bracket on the dash for the MIC, this was all Delco and was an GM option for 78. My car was the only one I ever saw with that option and I have been around vette's my whole life, so that option must have been very rare. I was the first owner although I did not order the car, Brought it new from a Chevy dealer in Saratoga NY.

I use an app called "Waze" on my phone.
It's an extremely popular application that collects data from all its users. Location, speed, road hazards, police location, etc.
If police are reported by someone it will warn you as you approach and ask you to validate the report is still correct.
The more you use the app the more "credibility" you build in your reports.

Uses factory antenna back in the day 1978 around that time as I recall. But the range is very limited because of that. But was a very convient package. Remember the body is fiberglass so it isn't like you have a ground plane or can pluck a magnet mount with a K-40 CB antenna to get superior reception like on a regular metal passenger vehicle.
