DYI Brushed Aluminum Brake Shims-Directions and How to Pics
I recently did the DIY mod for Aluminum brake pad shims and they really look good on the car. For anyone with average skills you too can do this and I hope the pictures and info below help you if you decide to make them yourself.
I purchased aluminum roof flashing my local Home Improvement Store (Lowes). I simply placed the existing brake shim on the Aluminum metal and used a finishing nail to trace a template. I then used a good pair of scissors to cut it out.
Aluminum brake pad shims-Estimated time to make 1 hour.

Aluminum brake pad shims-Estimated time to make 1 hour.
What is needed:
- Four (4) pieces of 5X7in Aluminum Step Flashing (.50 cents each) or you can purchase a small roll for appox $10. Flashing comes in Galvanized Steel or Aluminum….you want Aluminum.
- Scissors to cut the flashing. It’s thin and scissor work great.
- Finishing nail or other tool to scribe the template onto the Aluminum
- Existing Brake Shim to trace onto the Aluminum.
- Small drill bit if holes are needed (based on brake pads)
Points to keep in mind:
- The aluminum is soft so use a cloth when putting it on your working surface to avoid scratches.
- It is also sharp, so use care when handling. If you have to drill a small hole (I did for the rear set) use a small bit and then go larger. Use care when drilling and clamp if possible. If drilling and it spins you could get a serious cut.
Hope this helps.
