Default Rear End Clunk on 2005

Here is my problem: I recently pulled my Vette out of storage and on my way home from a buddies house the rear end starting making a lot of clunking and snapping noised while going in a straight line on the freeway. I've done some searching around and it sounds like people had a clutch pack issue while making turns. I was driving at 40mph on a very smooth flat straight road and kept making random clunking noises which were very pronounced. I have one month left of my GMPP warranty and I need this addressed because this is the third year with a major rear end issue. The past two years they tore the transmission/differential apart because of gasket leaks...

If somebody has had this issue please let me know of your solution

UPDATE 3-25

Update!!! When I bounce on the rear end something in the suspension is squeaking really loud, maybe a strut, end link, or what????

Get it too the dealer and get it documented, it should be covered after the warranty period expires because the claim originated while the car was still covered.

Get that car to the dealership asap

Theyre likely going to change the diff fluid because its cheap and easy. but because nothing ever simply works out like that, it probably wont fix the problem and youre going to have to take it back in again.

At the very least the problem will be in the system so they will still have to correct it even after the warranty is up.

What they said ...

I changed the fluid to Amsoil as mine was not under Warr. and that was the least expensive thing to do 1st go round. (and assuming it was not a hard mechanical issue) 2 years now and no problems... just FYI

I went to the dealership and had their Corvette specialist go for a ride along. He also noticed the creaking and clunking in the rear end as we drove through the parking lot. The noise happens every time I go over an uneven bump which I assume this is the sway bar links?!?! They can't get me in until Monday so I'll let the car sit til then.

could be many things

ball joints and tie rod ends should also be considered

if that doesnt resolve it, check the subframe attachment points to make sure theyre all torqued down correctly

Each of the past two years I've had a differential and transmission leak so the entire drive train has been removed from the clutch on back. I think with my vehicle being disassembled that much I'm bound to have issues like this going forward...

Thank the lord I've had a GMPP warranty but it runs out next month EEEEEKKK

My vote to anti-sway bar links. Easy fix.

Ditto for me. Amsoil solved my problem with the clunking.

Rattles/clunks from the sway bar endlinks is a common issue.

My '09 endlinks were replaced under extended warranty a few weeks ago. Easy fix -- but it took an extra day to get the parts.

Hopefully new endlinks fix it for you. Might also involve something else, like this: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...at-it-was.html

It's making this noise with the car off so it's not the differential. I think the noise is coming from the struts or end links. I'll have the car at the dealership Monday so hopefully we can address the issue easily. One month left of my GMPP!!!

Ok... The noise went away today. It's colder out today so would that be a factor?

Ambient temps can everything to do with suspension issues/noises. Chatter,Fluid change fixes are associated with noises while turning. Most common fixes for your issue is tightening/ replacement of the swaybar end links and/ or properly torquing the rear axle nuts. Do you know if your car was lowered? That could also create issues if lowered to far especially if the bushings on the lowering bolts were cut.

Yup it's lowered on Dunbar bolts so I'm sure this had an effect. I'll be at the dealer tomorrow morning so hopefully we can address the problem

UPDATE 3-26: The dealer replaced the sway bar links and there is still a noise in the right rear side. They're going to replace the right side control arm bushing to see if this corrects the issue.

Have you looked into your ride height adjustment yet?
