I am planning on driving my 2011 C6 convertible to California next week. I am concerned about heavy snow in the mountains of Colorado and California. I do not want to get stuck so I am looking to buy a set of snow chains for my C6. I tried JC Whitney but they do not carry chains for my Corvette. I did find a set of truck chains but they seem a little loose around the tires. Do you think I should try using the truck chains?
I understand your wanting to drive the Vette but the trade off you should consider is: TAKE THE SOUTHERN ROUTE. I think the minimal clearnace between the tires and the fenders make for a very iffy proposition on using chains; and this assumes you have it at a stock height.
Assuming that you really have lost your mind and are really considering the use of tire chains on your Corvette, you might first want to consider that the owner's manual specifically says don't use them. It goes on to state that there is not enough clearance to use them and that if you do use them, damage to the vehicle's suspension components, brake componets and numerous other areas likely will result. While it doesn't say so, I would hazard a guess that such damage would not be covered by the new vehicle warranty.
The odds of heavy snow coming through CO this time of year is pretty slim, especially with the warm dry winter we just had. You could take I40 but the drive through the mountains here is MUCH better.
What Mtns are you planning to go through in Colorado?
I live in the mtns of Southern Colorado and the weather has been nice lately...in the 70's yesterday. It could change though.
...Do you think I should try using the truck chains?
Absolutely... if you have snow. And a truck.
Seriously, just keep an eye on weather forecasts & expected road conditions.
While it's true that CO weather is notorious for changing quickly on any given day (e.g., sunny in the morning, stormy in the afternoon), it's very predictable.
That is, storm systems don't just materialize out of nowhere -- we see 'em coming many days in advance.
So you'll have time to adjust your route to the south, if necessary.
