Default ZR1 style spoiler for base C6 question drill/tape on

I am interested in getting a ZR1 style spoiler for my base c6 but I have not found the exact one that I want. I know that there are two types:
drill on and stick/tape on.

With the drill on, you obviously have to drill holes but you also have studs that go into the holes where the stock 3rd brake light assembly goes.
With the stick on, 2-sided tape is used and you tape the entire thing on over your bumper and stock 3rd brake light.

I am looking for one that is a combination of the two. I dont want to drill holes into my bumper so I want to go with the stick on option. However, as mentioned above, with this you tape over the 3rd brake light. I would much rather take that assembly out and use the holes to mount the zr1 style spoiler.

So what I am looking for is a spoiler that has double sided tape but also has the 4 studs in the middle so I can attach it where the original brake light assembly goes. I would like to think that I could just buy a drill on spoiler, cut off the studs I dont want, and then put tape around the edges. Has anyone done this? I am afraid that the spoiler styles are different and if I try and use tape on one that is a drill on, that the edges wont be wide enough even for the skinny tape.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions or past experience!!

Don't know if anyone has done it, but as I started reading your post I was thinking the same thing you are. I would think your idea of cutting the out side studs off flush and using a strong two sided tape in those seas would work.

I dunno...

Either drill it and install it or forget about it. It's an OEM spoiler if you drill won't hurt resale value. It's not like you'll keep the car for 50 years and change your mind.

Don't overthink, just do what you want.

I found what your looking for. Somebody sold one in the FS section a while ago. Check it out. Maybe able to contact the seller and find out who makes it. The main question is how does it fit since it aftermarket product.

I've never seen one that mounts over the factory one. I don't know how the third brake light would work in that situation. They all use the existing holes the factory one uses then you either tape the ends down or drill holes. Drilling 4 extra holes is simple when you have a template.

Lightly tape paper over mounting holes and poke hole through. Put painters tape down to prevent scratches. Position spoiler and tape paper down to the car, lift off spoiler and drill through holes marked. You may have to elongate holes slightly for positioning, the C7 Carbon spoiler needs only two holes holes to drill. Reuse your brake light( file inside of spoiler so brake light fits properly )

Thank you for the feedback everyone!

The reason I want to stay away from drilling is for resale. If I decide to sell my vette and people arent liking the spoiler, I could easily take it off it was taped on. If there were holes, I would have to buy a new bumper. Don-Vette, I will definitely use your method if I decide to drill, thank you for that info!!!

Here is the one that is tape-on:

I have replied to that thread with the one that was FS a while a go and I will reach out to Ice95z for info!

Thanks again everyone! I will keep you updated on what I find and please keep the suggestions coming.

^^I've never seen that one before. I see how they worked the third brake light now. Interesting.
I seriously doubt anyone would not like it on there.

I would recommend you avoid the tape on type. I bought a ZR1 replica that used the center bolts and tape on both sides out to the ends. I bought it from a forum vendor and had them install it. There were small gaps that I could live with initially but after about 6 months the gaps started getting bigger until I could not stand it. Bought a ZR1 extended type that was bolt on and am now very happy. Cannot imagine a spoiler being a deal breaker on selling unless it just looks like crap

A few things to consider, following the directions and drilling the holes is not that difficult. Don showed you an easy way to mark the holes, and if you purchase a factory spoiler it comes with a paper template to tape over the bumper and then mark your spot to drill.

Secondly I would not trust tape to last through the years and hold your spoiler better than using the studs.

Having had to remove my spoiler, I can tell you, that unless you remove the spoiler as soon as you place it on the car, over time, it will leave a mark on your plastic bumper. So taking one off for purposes of resale may not be as easy as it sounds because it may leave a mark where it sat on the car.

I had the same general thoughts before I put on mine.
I read several posts of aftermarket spoilers taped on and most were not happy in the long run.
I do believe it was a legitimate factory option that one could order on any body style but I'm not totally sure.

so I figured about the resale there are 2 main types of potential buyers:
#1: people that don't know its not factory original.
they don't care and/or like it anyways.
#2: people who know corvettes/c6's and know that it was (most likely) not a factory option.
I'm sure 99% of these like it anyways.

just get out the drill

yea and seeing how my vette already has H/C/I/E with 500 whp, Im sure the potential buyer would like the spoiler as an add-on!

Im going to go with a black spoiler. Not sure if I want extended or not.

I installed the C7Carbon ZR1 extreme. I removed the 2 outer studs and did not drill into my bumper. I used the 2 inner bolts to secure the 3rd brake light and secure the wing down. I used 2 2ft strips of 3M "wide" double sided tape. 1 on each side. The wider tape works fantastic on the wide base the spoiler has

how long have you had it installed? Have you seen gap issues like others have? Did you install the tape on the front or the back side of the spoiler?

Have it installed for a few weeks now. No gaps. Has seen many high speed runs. I applied the tape in the middle of the base of the spoiler. Not too close to the rear of the wing or the front to avoid gaps. Rubbing alcohol to clean the rear deck of the car before applying. Did it on a nice hot day to keep it tacky so it adheres nicely. I refuse to drill holes into my C6Z. If the surfaces are clean and the tape is applied correctly there will be no gaps or issues. It's the same tape that is used to apply the BSM's on the C5's. You will have no regrets and a better piece of mind that you didn't drill into your beautiful C6. Just my $0.02

Thanks for the input, I'm back to square one now! I might try what you did first, because there will be no loss from drilling holes. For taking out the studs, did you have to cut them or could you pull them out/unscrew them? Thanks
