Tip to save $ for OnStar

Got it for both of my GM vehicles at $149 per along with 100 minutes of phone per and the turn by turn nav, they are offering deals. I feel more secure with the trips into no mans land, like Death Valley and up in the mid part of Nevada, look at cell phone coverage in that area...not.

I too have State Farm, and received a letter directly from State Farm (not my agent) that stated I would receive a free 1-yr subscription to OnStar, if I agreed to have my mileage sent to State Farm. This was about a year ago and I declined the offer, for the same reason as another CF member...didn't want State Farm to have access to my mileage unless I was the one sending it to them...but on hindsight, I think it was a mistake on my part and I may contact my agent to see if the offer is still available.

Insurance companies are becoming more invasive and high tech. Forgot which company advertises some gadget you just plug in so they can monitor your driving habits. But I agree the miles are not as much of a concern as the monitoring of driving habits.

I like the service. My cabin in Maine has no cell service so the onstar phone is my safety net. I will be renewing in June.
To the OP, thank you for the info, do not let joksters bother you here. I bought a Carlisle Blue GS, you should read what they say about that color!!! As if I care what they say.......NOT!

BTW, Carlisle Blue + white stripe + comp grays = Awesome!

You did good. About as good as possible I guess if you like the service. I carry a cell phone and use Map Quest or a Garmin when ever I need directions which is seldom. At a min that is $150 buck per year that stays in pocket. To each his on as they say.

Thanks OP for the great info! I love it when people share their savings on here!
I have a question. Our free trial onstar will expire in July. Do you really need the turn by turn if your car comes equipped with GPS? Wouldn't it be the same thing?

I don't know about anyone else, but I bought the safe and sound package even though I am never without a cell phone. When I use the Vette it's to drive back deserted curvy roads for fun. Should I ever veer off one and am knocked out or hurt to where I can't move, it will sure be worth the money to have it since they will know when the airbags deploy and send help. I even had my OnStar upgraded from analog to digital just for this purpose. Better to have and not need than to need and not have, as JFK once said.
Even better now that I know when I have to renew what I can do and hopefully save more money. Thanks.

but as been mentioned before their cell phone reception is second to no one. the clearest and strongest signal i ever encountered in a cell phone. you would think you are on a land line.

just got off the phone with onstar as my 6mo free trial is to end 6/5/12. i just cut to the chase and asked if they would do $149yr for the complete package as i have now with 100 mins of phone time thrown in. got a very polite no and said i would have to pay for minutes. i replied with a very polite no also and they let me walk. so after june 5th no more onstar. i may call back in a couple days and ask for a supervisor as i really like the system and see if he(or she)can throw in the 100 minutes. i really didn't think they would let me walk but they did. will post results in a couple of days if i get the deal.

Onstar uses cell phone networks, so can't be 'stronger'. What happens is they use all networks available, so reception could be better than your cell provider (Verizon reportedly has the best coverage). But if you're out of cell range, Onstar is useless. And yes, I asked them directly and got the above answer.
I still have about 7 months left, but since I travel mostly in deserted areas with no cellular signal, I won't be renewing. If it was satellite based, I'd renew it even at their full price for the piece of mind afforded. But that was wishful thinking. So my cell and nav will continue to be my tools of choice. Haven't used Onstar at all, and probably won't for the remaining 7 months left. But I'm glad it's an option for those who find it valuable . I like options .
