Tip to save $ for OnStar
My 6 month free subscription to OnStar expires in a few days. The free service was the more expensive directions and connections plan, and i wanted to renew my subscription with the less expensive safe and sound plan.
on the website, the safe and sound plan is $199 per year. I called OnStar on the phone instead, and was quoted the same $199 price.
I asked the customer service rep if he could offer me any promotional rate that's a better deal. He said wait a minute, and came back on the line in a few seconds and said he could offer me the safe and sound plan for $149 per year.
i took the offer, saved a quick 50 bucks.

I have State Farm insurance and they will give me the OnStar Safe & Sound at zero cost to me. I turned them down as I didn't want State Farm tracking my mileage, etc

My six month trial on my new to me 08 ran out this month. I called in and they renewed it at $12.95 a month and gave me six more months of Directions & Connections free. They also reduced my wife's 07 Vert from $18.95 to $12.95 a month.

I will likely renew the basic plan when the free year expires. I think the theft recovery and accident response alone is probabaly worth it. Bought some minutes but have not used them.
Whether it works where your cell doesn't may depend who you already have. I think they may use the Verizon network. My ex had a Yukon, and for a while you could add the OnStar cell# to your Verizon family plan for their normal $10/mo. additional line fee. They since discontinued that, I think last year or so. You still had to pay the OnStar monthly fee, but didn't have to buy minutes to use the phone.

I like the service. My cabin in Maine has no cell service so the onstar phone is my safety net. I will be renewing in June.
To the OP, thank you for the info, do not let joksters bother you here. I bought a Carlisle Blue GS, you should read what they say about that color!!! As if I care what they say.......NOT!

See what I said above, based on my experience, I also think they do use Verizon. But, if you have another carrier for your cell, you may find yourself somewhere that only one or the other works.
I stayed in a small town in WV last year, had to drive 20 miles to even get a Verizon signal. Friends with ATT had a strong signal. The opposite was true in rural PA where my parents had lived when alive. Had a faint Verizon signal, but no ATT.
Your mileage may vary with T-mobile, Virgin, Sprint, etc. Friend of mine had one of those and coverage even around metro Boston area was spotty!

I don't have OnStar but there are times I would have felt better if I did. Driving through the middle of the desert 100 miles from anywhere civilized even if there were cell signal I wouldn't know who to call and if I did wouldn't know how to tell them where I was.
