Default harmonic balancer

I had a new harmonic balancer put on my '06 convertible. The car had 59,000 when the balancer went out and the dealer had to order a new part. The dealership said the new part was a new design and had to be manufactured hence the three week wait. The part finally came in and has worked as it should. The new balancer part # is 12635652. I don't know if that's a new part number for a new part or an existing part number for a new part or if it's the same old number for the same old part. Anyway, now it works great and hopefully it'll last another 59,000 miles. Hope this helps anyone needing a harmonic balancer.

I got the "new" one as well. I also waited for three weeks. Apparantly GM now has a different vendor manufacturing them. Since mine was replaced under warranty, GM would not allow the dealer to use a unit that was one the shelf. They had to wait for a newer unit.

Does anyone know who made them before and who makes them now? After making millions of engines without this problem I don't know why GM ever abandoned the keyway and went to a press-fit damper. To the best of my knowledge all of the Gen III and Gen IV V8 engines use a press-fit damper (with no keyway) and its been this way since the LS1 was introduced in 1997. A friction washer became a production part of the harmonic balancer with the 2006 LS2 and LS7 engines (and I suspect it was the 'fix' for late model 2005's as well).

I'd be curious to know if there has been any real changes to the harmonic balancer or if there was simply a change of manufacturers.

That's the same part # they are putting on mine tomorrow. I think the only way to tell if it's a different part is to look at the old one and new one together and compare. I will ask that they return the old one to me. I would like to see exactly what is going on with it. I've read what happens to them but I want to see for myself.

Buy an ATI unit and never worry about it again.
