Default Two Guys Garage: Evolution of the LS

Episode was on Speed TV last night but replays Wed. at 4:30pm EST. Pretty cool, they open up an old 350, an LS1 and an LS3. They point out the evolution of combustion chambers, cylinder heads and valvetrain and so on. I've owned an LS1 GTO, LS2 GTO and an LS3 vette so it was nice to see the inner workings of two of them. Highlights a bunch of cool improvements that went into the LS3.

Glad you said that so I could change OP to reflect 4:30pm EST.

I agree I haven't watched it much except when they were doing upgrades on the C5 they had on a few episodes. I do like how they seem to enjoy a wide variety of autos and play up the positives in them. I've ended up buying some of the reviewed products also, it's where I found out about Mother's Back-to-Black many years ago before I was into detailing.

According to a bunch of 2005-2007 owners the LS series of engines reached it's pinnacle with the LS2 and has been on a downhill spiral ever since.

I tape everything then you fast forward through the commercials. Really good with Barrett Jackson and Mecum. I think cable and dish have this option.

Not sure why they say that. The LS3 dyno #'s are usually pretty good stock and it responds well to mods.

I'm usually interested to learn more about our cars or hear somebody's opinion, (I don't always have to agree) that's the beauty of those Speed Channel shows.

Saw the show the other night. Really spells out the evolution of the cylinder heads and breathing, LS3 is a big step ahead

But they don't even mention the LS2 - is the LS2 head so similar to the LS1 that it isn't worth a mention?

The LS2 head is the same as the LS6 from the C5Z. They moved the knock sensors on the LS2 so they don't hear the valve train as much as the LS1.

Many road racers regard the LS6 as bulletproofed for endurance. Head design has superior oil drain back feature to ensure bearings to survive the grueling demands of roadracing!

In the quest for a few more pony, GM redesign the LS3 head and the superior designed oil drain back feature in the LS2/LS6 was compromised!

GM's attempt to combat the LS3 oiling problem is their make beileve Dry Sump! Thats the rest of the story!

I can see that....I mean the LS2 intake is almost as good as the old LS1 intake with the EGR.

LS6 head WITHOUT the sodium filled valves.

Yup. The 243s do bolt the LS3 just fine. The LS3 heads work on the LS2 but unless work is done to them they will not work on the LS1/LS6......but some "make" them work.

^^^^Although they are interchangeable between LS2 & 3. Whats your point?

Aside from economics and a few pony, why would a person want to risk oil starvation due to poor oil drain back on an LS3? And factoring in cost + rework and retrofitted on an LS6?

I don't get it!

Just saying that the LS2 engine can reap some rewards for power by simply putting on the LS3 heads which are intended fora 4" and larger bore. That is all.

Its not that its "poor"....its just not as good as the LS6. Not EVERYONE takes corners for 30 seconds at a time and at 178 mph. lol

Some guys build GTO/C5s and use the BETTER heads for more power and drag racing and if they are not taking said corners at 178 for 30 seconds at a time the oil starvation means jack. And it is an upgrade in every area to the LS1 head.

You dont get it because you dont do it. Lots of guys are using them on their LS1/LS6 power plants. I dont understand getting my nails done. lol
