Default Help!!!....dull paint after rubbing compound

Had to use some rubbing compound to get a tar like substance off my front bumper and now the paint in that area is slightly dull. What can i use to restore the shine? Read on other message boards to use a polish which contains abrasives, but not sure which one. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
David

A finishing polish should do the trick.

If you are getting your products over the counter try Meguiars Ultimate Polish. Then make sure to clean it before applying a wax or sealant because of the oils the polishes leave behind.

It all depends on how harsh of rubbing compound you used. But, use a good wax over top of it. If you have a buffer that will help bring the shine back while using the wax.

Actually the rubbing compound is more abrasive. In essence you have sanded your paint. As long as you have not cut the clear coat, you can just polish the finish back by hand. Just use something like SwirlX and a coat of wax, you will be fine.

why don't you post this in the car care section - include a picture of the area in question.

I agree

When I have a trouble area and have to use compound,I only use the white, followed by wax/cleaner then just wax and buff.

The best thing to use, to remove tar, is a wet drier sheet. It dissolves the tar and doesn't damage the paint.

WD-40 works well too....just clean up and re-wax the section afterwards

DuPont "Finesse It" white fine polish applied with a white foam pad using a Portacable, or similar random orbital tool.

Meguiars #205 with a dual action polisher should bring the shine back. It's a long shot that hand polishing will bring it back. If you don't have the tools, I would suggest stopping by a local detail shop in your area and ask about buffing up that particular spot. Best of luck to you!

Yeah you will need a machine to put the polish on correctly. And it will save you some arm pain and time.

WOW! I'm 63 years old, been working on cars since I was 13, never heard about this, I'll try it next time I have tar.

3m rubbing 3m polish and soft microfibre towels!
By hand!
Start with a mix then move to straight polish compound.
Wax when you get the finish back.

Also, put two sheets in your trunk and you have an air freshener for cheap.
