Isn't the rib ring supposed to be flush with the center section?

Actually I am, that is what I do for a living, a video producer for 31 years, but for something like this I thought my phone cam was good enough. I avoid slrs and video cams when I am away from work.

You are right the outside of my harmonic balancer has slid all the way back, it threw the AC belt and screwed up the AC. It has a oil leak now so I do not know all the damage until I get it off.
I am glad it happen in the winter it may be on the lift for a while.

I'm sorry about the problem. It's a great looking car with lots of exterior modifications. I didn't see anything in your profile but I'm curious...have you done anything under the hood? Does it have a supercharger or forced induction of any kind? With forced induction applications the crank should always be pinned and IMO high power naturally aspirated applications would also benefit from pinning the crank. I hope the repair goes smoothly...good luck.

I'm no expert but basically, after producing probably 100 million engines without a problem, GM changed from using a keyway on the harmonic balancer to using a press-fit damper....all the Gen III and Gen IV V8 engines use a press-fit damper with no keyway and it's been this way since the LS1 was introduced in 1997. Therein lies the problem....the harmonic balancer doesn't use a key/keyway. Under loading the bolt can loosen and unscrew and when it does the dampener slips until finally bad things happen. GM started using a friction washer (as a 'bandaid' fix) with the 2006 model year and I suspect it was the 'fix' with late model 2005 C6's as well.

Chances are your car will be fine but the problem can happen to any C6. It would be worthwhile to check the bolt periodically. If you notice any undue wobble to the crank-pulley, if you throw belts or if you notice belts fraying I'd have the car checked. FWIW a small amount of pulley wobble can be within acceptable parameters but if in-doubt have the car checked. The problem happens way too often for my comfort level but in reality the problem only afflicts a small percentage of Corvettes. The only sure-fire cure is to pin the crank...go back to the tried and true keyway.

No problem, most people don't understand why I don't want to take pics when I am away from work. Like any job you like to get away from it. It was a bad phone pic.
