Default air dam question

Everyone scrapes this part below the front bumper and usually the plastic screw / push pin comes loose from one of the pieces.

Has anyone tried to simply use a bolt, nut, large washer to keep these pieces from separating?

I know what you mean, as I have to reattach it alot. I'm wondering if one makes the piece solid with a nut and washer, whether it will tear the pieces.

You could do that but I dont see a need to. Even when they are separated the pieces are still pressed against each other and in place.

I would guess it's designed that way so that if you hit it hard enough, it'll separate and so you only damage one piece, rather than all of them, including possibly damaging the mounting points as well.

I use a nut, bolt and washer to connect the outer pieces to the center piece. Seems to work well.

My bolt slot is torn too, but I just push it all back together if some road trash knocks them apart.

At 100k miles, I'll probably replace all 3 pieces. Currently at 52k, so that will be about 3 years.

I'm told that if you remove those parts it will have a negative effect on radiator cooling.

They are needed for proper cooling.

I also reattach mine fairly regularly. I scrap every time I leave (or enter) my driveway....I use original hardware and just reattach...nbd...easy enough to do.

Mine had torn slots and was pretty scratched up so I just replaced it, more of a chore than I expected. Got mine from a vendor here. GM actually calls this the radiator air deflector and it is clear that it pushes a lot of air up into the radiator. I would not drive without it.
