'05 replaced at 144,000 for the first time
Recommend this quality after market part - Chevy mechanic thought highly of it.

I would think Failure versus VIN.
The failure might be due to bad lots delivered to GM.
I am sure GM is not building these but if they are like all the other pulleys I have replaced on the car CHINA is clearly stamped on them.

Based on your experience, the pictures posted earlier and the video posted by gbgary, it seems like they tend to separate ad go back into the engine. I guess that would be better than going forward into the steering rack and radiator, does everyone agree?

Have any of you seen the results of a catastrophic failure of this part? What is the failure mode, and what do the innards look like after the failure. Based on your comments, the aftermarket units seem like they have better engineered interior materials and / or construction. Is there any reason to think that its life span is related to how the car is driven? I can’t get my head around the idea that some of these failures come early in a car’s life while others seem to happen mid-life or later. It would be interesting to see if there is any relationship to a given parts batch and a specific production run of cars. I wonder if any of the people that voted have C-5’s as that also would skew the results. It is pretty hard to come up with a poll that asks all the right questions and covers all the bases. Based on the results the majority of owners have not had an issue with this component. That is not what I expected to see based on previous comments / threads.

Seems like I see a lot of folks posting threads about the possible / failure of the harmonic balancer on their cars. I was curious in seeing just how pervasive the problem is. If you respond please indicate the mileage on your vehicle when / or each time you experienced the problem.

No results to skew, many owners have had this type of problem starting on the C5 run and continuing with the C6. GM chose to go with the same type of balancer and roll the dice. Part should have been upgraded on the C6 but wasn't due to cost. Very painful for owners - almost as bad as the dreaded column lock issue.

I worry about what else it will destroy when it breaks and, what that will cost me...GM should really step up! Keeping fingers crossed at 58,000+ miles in my 06 vert.
