Default Why is it always....

Why is it ALWAYS that when you call a vendor to order (expensive) parts they

a) take your money from your account right away
b) promise you a delivery date

and then a week later when you call them up there is some kind of an issue that pushed the delivery out days or weeks.....

It happens to me ALL the time. Anyone else? Why? And why the heck do I need to pay the full amount (including shipping) upfront? Its just frustrates the heck out of me...

Ordered parts from Summit Racing yesterday, shipped from Ohio and being delivered tomorrow (I hope).....Good Luck, kinda sucks when they're not upfront with you!

Default Not my experience!

Every one I've dealt with takes the money only when the item ships.

I don't like paying for something up front either. I think it's only fair to charge you once the item ships.

Maybe the manufacturer requires them to pay up front same as they do to you.

It is a smart business decision. Why should they float their cash out there when they can just use yours? They get their profit right away. If they are lucky they get 30 days to pay the manufacturer (stretch that to 45 or 60 like a lot of companies) and they are making money on your money

This is another reason I like buying from Ebay sellers with high positive feedback.
Usually I have my stuff in under a week.
If I have a problem I open a dispute with Paypal and they refund.

I agree Andy, has happened to me just this month. Trying to give the vendors the business but since I am 20 min from Summit Racing (Ohio), might just start taking my business there.

kinda stinks some places do that...I've noticed a few vendors that won't actually charge until it ships, but most charge right away as OP indicated. I guess if they (vendor) have to order the big ticket item, and they don't normally keep it in stock, they don't want someone cancelling the order , then they are left trying to return the item to the manufacturer which they may or may not be able to do.,.. inventory sitting on a shelf is money they are out of pocket. too

On most big ticket items, I try to ask if I can pay half now and then half when they get it/ship it etc....

I think it helps keep everyone honest.

It doesn't hurt to ask. I've been surprised how often I get a YES!

There are a LOT of forum vendors that use this practice. And quite a few don't bother to mention that it will be MONTHs before they ship. I simply won't do business with them once I figure this out.

Thats why I used a non forum vendor to buy my wheels, they only wanted 50% up front and the rest when ready to ship with free shipping.
Other vendors wanted it all paid up front.
Pisses me off when vendors want all your money then you wait forever for the product.

Yeah not fun. I try to make sure the customer knows an estimated time of arrival and that they will be charged up front. I've never had any issues with it. If delays happen I usually try to stay on top of letting them know with the option of cancelling. I can't remember anything taking that long to ship on our end though.

Expensive parts usually require quite a bit of money. Nobody wants to be stuck with these parts if the customer changes his/her mind. People change their mind a lot unfortunately. Most vendors here aren't working with a ton of capital.

people often get buyers remorse. they change their mind, found it for twelve cents less somewhere else, or didnt like having to wait a week, and found a guy to send it in five days. for any reason, some will cancel. dealers may then be stuck holding a custom item for a while. there could be "restocking charges" from their supplier as well. follow the money and see who loses.

I ordered parts last summer well before Carlisle...well...I cancelled the order in November I think it was because they'd hadn't arrived yet..

I think a lot of the vendors work with limited stock and they get it from a supplier once it is ordered from a customer. That is the only reason I can think of. I realize on parts that are to painted to match that would normally be a delay and the vendor I use on those states that up front.
