Can I quiet the pipes...just a bit.
2005 Corvette.
I am pretty sure I have after-market pipes on my vette. Why are the pipes much louder in the car than if I stand behind the car and listen to the pipes. Any ideas on how I can lower the loudest in the car 10 to 15dBs.
I was shock to see the thin metal chasis right behind the seats. I would think it should have some sound damping foam there instead of just carpet.
The road noise I can handle...the pipes WOW!

My guess is you have an aftermarket exhuast. I had a 2005 and that car (exhaust) was quiet.
You could try TKO's Blockit. I have a 2012 GS with NPP and a Mild to Wild switch. With the butterflies open, it loud. The Blockit takes the edge off.

Yes, change them out and sell your existing pipes on ebay as some others have suggested.
Corsa makes some nice moderate touring pipes that sound great!

It's louder inside the car because the rear glass acts like a horn to focus the sound straight at the drivers head. Combine the sound of the exhaust with the vibration of the rear tub (which is a thin "plastic") and panel behind the seats, and you have DRONE.
If you like the sound of the exhaust, tame the drone by properly insulating the hatch area.
Add vibration dampening in a 50% coverage (DynaMat xTreme or similar products) directly to the plastic rear tub, and behind the seats. Then cover everything (100% coverage) with a sound deadening material like Ensolite.
About $100 in materials, and 3-4 hours of time, and there will be a big difference.

Get a NPP exhaust. I have it on my car. I have the control switch coded in to my sun visor buttons. Open is loud, closed is stock. The wife loves it. We can cruise at 75 on the highway and no drone or noise. When I'm by myself, I can get good and vulgar. I running long tubes and cat-less. I can talk on the Bluetooth phone while cruising down the highway.

NPP is a bi-mode exhaust which means it has dampers in 2 of 4 tips which open and close via remote switch. Closed quiet, open louder. The NPP is not for everyone due to the fact they're not loud enough and there is some clutter at the tip area but the ones that have them like them. Others take them off and switch to aftermarket.

Well, loud was his problem. He wanted to tone it down a notch. The NPP is the quieter side of the bi-mode exhaust options. With my Long tubes, no cats and supercharger, loud is an easy commodity to generate. Quiet, on the other hand, is a challenge. The NPP closed is like a stock exhaust and totally fantastic for highway cruising without loud noises. Open, with my setup, and it's pretty damn loud.
