I have to sell my C6
#21
My first vette was a 87 coupe and it was plenty fast for a DD. You will be going back to older technology for ignition for the pre-LT1 but it is really not a problem. If you go with the LT1 make sure the Optispark ignition dist. has been upgraded. Again, most, if not all, have been The older C4's also had problems with the valve guide seals getting hard and leaking but I suspect all these have been changed. If they are bad you get a little blue smoke at start-up but not bad. Taking the roof off was more of a problem because you have to loosen screws instead of releasing a lever. I had trouble with window leaks on the 87 but not on the 94. The six speed stick can be very expensive to fix and the 4+3, although rugged, can have issues that can be expensive. I found the sports seats in the 87 to be the best seats I've ever had in a vette but if you have a little middle edge spread they can be tight. They went to wider seats in the newer C4's to better fit the average vette owner. I kinda even liked the dash in the 87 even though it is a little gimicky. They really didn't have active suspension but the early C4's could have adjustable shocks and later C4's all had traction control.
I don't know how much you have to spend on an older vette but I would look at a C5. You can get a very nice one for 15-20,000 and maybe even lower. I found there was a big difference between the C4 and C5.

I had an 87 while I had my 98.
The 87 with the L98 motor has a LOT of torque but not much horsepower. It was just as fun to drive as any corvette I've had.
What you wont get is looks form other people. I know people always seem to notice a c5 or c6 coming around a corner. Hardly anyone takes a second look at a C4. But as a driver its a fun car.

I couldn't go to an early C4 personally. Nothing against them, but they look super dated. 90's models are alright.
I vote for a C5. They still look good IMO. The interior is a bit dated, but you'll get over that quick.

I had an L98, LT-1 and LS1 in my Trans Ams--'88, '97 and 2000 Ram Air. While the LS1 in the WS6 was clearly the best, the LT-1 is far superior to the L98, assuming the Opti-spark was corrected, as noted in the post above. You're talking 245 vice 300hp, and the L98--good low end torque, is all done hp-wise at 4500rpm. The LT-1 is still going strong at that rpm. The price difference is negligable if you went with a late '90s LS1 and you would certainly get the best bang for your buck.

I have nothing against the C4, over in the C5 section al they do is put down the C4 and it's owners. If I had to get rid of of C6 I would have no problem with a C4, sure they're dated, but so are C5's.

I have owned 25 vettes from all 6 generations and the one I kept the longest by a huge margin was my 86 pace car convert that I owned for over 18 years. Was a lot of fun to drive and the funny thing is I sold it to a guy in Scottsdale who came to look at it in his nearly new C6 Z06. He emailed me about 6 months later and had sold the Z06 because after buying the 86 convert he rarely ever drove the Z.
This is a photo I took of it sitting in the driveway just before the guy left with the car. That was all original paint and the car had 105k miles on it when this photo was taken:
