Garmin I would say is winner, with free updates.

Tom Tom has free map updates also. Plus the Tom Tom traffic monitor is supposedly better than Garmin's. Garmin finds a satellite faster upon boot up. But after finding the satellite initially the Tom tom holds its own and re-routes as fast as the Garmin IIUC.. Not sure about the fuss over the UI. I've not used the Garmin. But I've found the Tom Tom to be perfectly acceptable and easy enough to figure out. I guess I'm the oddball here since most here seem to prefer the Garmin. And maybe at one time the Garmin was a clear winner. But if you look elsewhere iE GPS review, you will find that the 2 are not that far apart with each having its strengths and weakness.

Just sold my Garmin Nuvi 1390t. Loved it. Intuitive, accurate, and simply cool with the lane guidance. Garmin all the way. Nowadays the navigation on my Android phone blows everything away (Google maps for the win). Maybe a small tablet would be the way to go?

Interesting that Garmin seems to be the leader. I am finding that the 1535 Tom Tom has a few features the Garmin doesn't have but what is most important to me is it being user friendly. Neither one seems more user friendly than the other. The Tom Tom maybe a little more confusing because it gives you more options to personalize it.
The Tom Tom has a nice screen and no matter which way you have the screen the screen will adapt to a readable position. It's going to be a tough one. I have both units but I can only keep one. Perhaps one has a better traffic report system than the other?
The Tom Tom has a nice "Help" feature that can get you to nearest hospital, repair service, fire station, police station, pharmacy and nearest dentist. I don't think the Garmin has that button.

One of my older Garmins had an anomaly that was odd: If I put in an address in Dallas and left from my house in Southeast Oklahoma the most direct route was never taken. It was like there was an invisible wall between my town and Dallas that it would always go around - routing me at least 75 miles out of my way. (I didn't go that way 'cause I knew better...) Once I got past where that invisible wall was it would work correctly. I have no idea what was causing that. It might have been in the map because I have updated them all a few times and that error has gone away.
I didn't get the NAV in my '10 GS because it was an expensive option and I honestly didn't like the way the big screen in the dash looked. With Garmins selling for $100-$150 anymore I can go several of those and still be ahead. I have an Android phone and it does have a good NAV feature but I'd rather my phone be doing the phone work and not the NAV work...

I have a Nuvi 760 that always told me my house was on the opposite side of street. My Magellan didn't do that and it cost alot less than the Garmin. The 760 also too me off route in the most in direct way to destination.
So far the screen on the Tom Tom looks better than the Nuvi 2595 with more info at bottom of screen like speed, time, speed limit and on side it h as the traffic feature in a separate box.
I had the Garmin set up that way with info on bottom of screen but now it seems to have disappeared and I can't get it back. I think the Garmin is easier to use but may like the Tom Tom better. Just not sure yet and will have to test them out.

I have two Garmins and rode shotgun on a 2000 mile trip in a car with a Tom Tom.
There were a couple of features on the Tom Tom I liked, but I prefer the Garmin over all.
My newest one is a 40LM that I picked up at Bet Buy for $85. Free lifetime map updates, four times a year.

On the Tom Tom I don't care for the feature where if you touch the screen especially in error the unit will mark that spot and it will stay there blinking and I can't find where to remove that blinking dot. Also everything seems to be based on home location.
Tom Tom displays more info on screen than Garmin 2595 unless I can find and get that dashboard feature back on screen with the Garmin.

So here's your choice. You can pay $179 or $119 for what is basically equal in its ability but has different quirks.
