Default Finished: z51 to z06 Brake Conversion w/ Gumby Wheels

Finally finished the z06 brake conversion on my 08 z51:

Pics are crap, sorry bout that and yes my car is filthy..I had to daily it this week :/

Parts:
Grand Sport/z06 Brakes
DBA T2 Street Slotted z06 rotors
Stainless Steel Lines
Hawk HPS Pads
Motul RBF600
1/4" spacers all around

Painted the calipers matte black and sprayed with a coat of high temp clear to protect the overlays. I didn't originally powdercoat because I road course my car, but I've since decided to go with a different car for the track. When the paint goes I'll send these in to Mike for a good powdercoating.

Special Thanks go out to the following:
  • Kevin (TXvette435) for helping me install all of these parts and the use of his lift
  • KNS Brakes for the awesome deal on the rotors and pads and the super fast shipping.
  • TPS Motorsports for the great deal on the SS brake lines. I had my order in by the morning, it shipped the same afternoon.
  • Motorsport Tech for the spacers. They custom cut my spacers and shipped them via UPS 2nd day for less than the cost of buying just the spacers from most other places.

Really like the choice of black for the caliper color.

The z06 brakes won't clear the wheels without them. It's a necessity. The gumby is the only c6 base wheel that will clear z06 brakes...and I've got enough room for a sheet of paper even with the spacer.

DO you need z06 brake lines or c6 steel brake lines?

You will need z06 lines as they are longer. I suggest getting a set of SS lines from TPS Motorsports:

http://www.tpsmotorsports.com/corvet...06-10-z06.html

And Rotors/pads from KNS Brakes:

Lots of people have had fitting problems (threads) when changing over to SS brake lines. What was your experience?

They fit without problem honestly, the hardest part of this whole process was fitting those padlets into the z06 brakes.

The z06 brakes have padlets unless you go with a one piece aftermarket design.

Next go around I'm going with a solid one piece design. My best friend made the overlays for me. I made the mistake of removing the "Corvette" lettering while cleaning my brakes so he made some out of vinyl for me and I sprayed them with a coat of high temp clear coat. They have held up thus far though the brake dust was not kind to the fronts.

I did this conversion back in 2006 on my 2005 C6. There were issues with the flexible hose and the hard line. Can't tell you how many guys that did this conversion had the problem of once the lines were disconnected, the new fitting would not fasten. It also seemed that this was a right rear problem most of the time. The female hard line fitting was always cross-threaded and stripped from the factory, necessitating the replacement of the hard line.

I purchased my car in Dec of 2005 and was invited to the C6 Bash in Bowling Green the following April. I was also given an appointment with the engineers, to be interviewed about what I liked and did not like about the car. I showed up with the car equipped with the Z06 brakes and it really freaked them out.

It's a great mod, for both performance and looks, especially for the rear. Stock C6 rear rotors just look like they came off a Honda Civic.

Enjoy your brakes
